(sixth time I have had an emergency landing off field) landed okay and called my wife to come with the trailer. the micro filter just slammed plain shut on me while flying. never seen nothing like this. could not even blow through it. no light, no air and could not clean it. don't know what clogged it. replace it and the secondary filter and everything is fine. now, back to the egt. I have a flashing light when something is wrong on the temps. the egt should have lighted up or at least shown a lean condition when it ran out of gas in the carbs. was wondering what do I need them for? are the egts really necessary? Anyone running without them. I remember airwolf telling me they do not recommend them on 912s being as they are 2 strokers. any comments? Here's a couple=3B I would use that microfilter again for NO amount of money. I'd take that sucker apart and find out WHY it slammed shut. Is an EGT necessary? Some would say no=2C some say yes. Personally=2C I LIKE knowing how well my engine is running (or how poorly). I'd say=2C "if your engine always runs perfect=2C and never=2C ever has any pro blems=2C don't worry about an EGT." Lastly=2C tell the guy at Airwolf he should refrain from giving advice on 912s 2 strokes.......'cause thar ain't any such critter!!' Mike ________________________________ Message 4 _____________________________________ Time: 05:23:19 AM PST US Subject: Re: Kolb-List: egt From: zeprep251@aol.com Ted, It is possible you have too fine a filter?I have seen a filter remove fuel additives and clog.It was a teflon additive that could pass through the car b and jetting with out problems but closed the filter. In theory, other than water, any particle smaller than the smallest orifice in the carb should not give you trouble, and that may be judged by the mesh of the filter screen t hat surrounds the main jet. The number of power failures you've had is amazing.Have you been able to locate the specific cause for each of them?I have a friend with a 912s on a mk3c that has had at least 2 events of lost power, fuel starvation in both cases ,but he has not identified the root cause for either. But he has stat ed that both times the fuel level in the tanks was close to half, but he fai led to engage the aux pump either time. It takes a few seconds for the egt probe to sense change. You may have had not enough time to register the change on a 4 stroke. Could you give me some insight into your other power failures? Have never felt I needed to monitor EGTs, with nearly 3,000 hours flying in front of 912 engines. john h mkIII Titus, Alabama ________________________________ Message 6 _____________________________________ Time: 07:44:00 AM PST US Subject: Kolb-List: Re: finally a flying day with video From: "gotime242" Great vid, thanks. Something like this: http://www.ssdieselsupply.com/product_338_In_Tank_Fuel_StrainerSock.html There are other versions that have the pickup outlet in the side. Then go to your friendly auto parts store with a good idea of what you want, and start browsing. As long as it is a likely candidate to go on the end of your fuel pickup tube, or inside the tank over your tank outlet, that's what you want. Pick out something with lots of surface area, and an opening that will easily adapt to your plumbing. Then it will be unlikely for your inline filter to ever see any junk. I replaced the glass tube with a piece of .58" alum tube. Had my first glass tube crack first night it was installed. Easy to stick a few elements in my flight bag if I should need them on a trip. Usually get 100 hours on an element. Elements can be cleaned in an emergency to get back into the air if you don't have a new replacement. john h mkIII Titus, Alabama ________________________________ Message 9 _____________________________________ Time: 09:24:15 AM PST US From: "John Hauck" Subject: Re: Kolb-List: Re: egt And a Purolator inline glass tube filter. john h Gang: This is what the filter looks like: http://www.eangler.com/product/MP80813459.htm?utm_medium=cpa&utm_source=Shopping john h mkIII Titus, Alabama ________________________________ Message 10 ____________________________________ Time: 10:05:28 AM PST US From: "pete" Subject: Kolb-List: Insurance > I have been getting my insurance thru USUA, it seems that USUA is just > about out of business, the volunteer worker have a full time job and can > only devote part time effort to keep things going. My mkIII is ok. I have been working on the the last several days in prep for my 2,000 mile flight out to Oregon next week. It is just about ready to go. All I have to do is pack my bag and load up my gear. Will be gone about one month or whenever I get tired and ready to come home. Glad the parts worked for you.
