Thanks for the concern. Most of us OK. Lot of folks are gonna feel this. And that is if there are no levee failures. Opened the Morganza Spillway yesterday. That will buy us a little (1 - 1.5 feet). This is record setting stuff. Nobody really knows how this will play out. Glad the levee system was built by the old guys, with pride in their workmanship. Move my Mark IIIC last Thursday, mostly because of threat of rain. No place for new water to go. Right now, Nauga Field OK. We still have close to 13 days before crest. John H - know your busy with departing this am. I'll try to return your call. Check in later if you get a chance. Keep us posted. Fly smart and safe. Watch out for that Density Altitude (Grants Milan, NM!!) For those that have been to Nauga. Water can be seen off the front porch of the camp/FBO. If you live between the Rockies and the Smokies and want to help, go twice, flush once!!! Decided to postpone my takeoff until Monday morning. Will still have a headwind to Neosho, MO, tomorrow, but somewhat lighter than today. Tuesday, west out of Neosho, Great Bend, KS, is forecasting: Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 70. Breezy, with a southeast wind between 13 and 21 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. If that holds true, I should have well over 100 mph ground speed. I can handle the wind when it is in my favor. After Fort Collins, CO, weather will be iffy through the mountains from Rock Springs, WY, Heber City, UT, Provo and on to Wendover, UT. Going to spend a few days in Wendover, then west to Elko, NV, and NW to the Rock House. Temps are much cooler out West. Hard to pack cold weather stuff when it is hot in the SE. Would like to see a better forecast this week, but don't think I am going to get it. Wednesday night snow is forecast in the Rockies between Rock Springs, WY, and Provo, UT. Not ready for that. john h mkIII Titus, Alabama ________________________________ Message 3 _____________________________________ Time: 08:18:05 AM PST US From: Arksey@aol.com Subject: Re: Kolb-List: Leaving Monday Hi John, Have a fun and safe flight. You write that Goodland, KS will be one of your stops, and in a prior post you mention Rock Springs WY. I'm sure that your actual route changes based on a number of factors - yet I'd really enjoy seeing a "start to finish" li st of the stops on the route you are planning to travel. Arty Trost Arty T/Gang: Most of the places I land are because I have landed there before and like them, or I have no other choice. When you need gas, you need gas. Speaking of gas, I'd never fly anywhere out West without a full tank. Never leave the ground unless I am topped off, if fuel is available. Fuel is not always available. I usually fly the same routes and land the same places because they work. The northern route from Gantt IAP to the Rock House: -Columbus, MS -West Helena, AR ...either -Mountain View or Heber Springs, AR -Neosho, MO -Great Bend, KS -Goodland, KS -Fort Morgan, CO -Loveland/Fort Collins, CO ...either -Laramie, WY or Walden, CO (depends on ceiling because Walden is about 8,500 MSL and have to climb above 10,000 to get over the mountains) -Dixon, WY is I come through Walden (nothing here, but I have spent the night here a couple times and stopped other times. I like it) -Rock Springs, WY (nearly always cold and windy, no matter what time of the year) -Fort Bridger, WY -Evanston, WY -Ogden, UT -Brigham City, UT -Jackpot, NV This flight I plan to meet relatives in Wendover, UT, so instead of going to Jackpot, I'll fly to Wendover, Elko, NV, and the Rock House. If weather is iffy, I'll fly from Elko to Winnemucca, NV, then north to McDermott and the Rock House. john h - waiting on weather (much better here than some old hanger at an isolated airfield) Rock House, OR ________________________________ Message 14 ____________________________________ Time: 01:58:49 PM PST US Subject: Kolb-List: Re: Leaving Monday From: "ces308" Hello John, Good luck on your trip! The second meeting (and last) I attended was at the home of John Hines, a Kolb pilot, because he wanted to show off his new hangar. I really liked his door, as I thought it was the simplest and lightest that I had ever seen. He had purchased the plans and all the hardware and then he assembled it on the ground inside the hangar. Works well using a Harbor Freight 12V worm drive winch. The hardware kit was very complete, with everything included except the wood, door skin structural framing for mounting the tracks, pulleys, etc, and the winch. Potential downsides: door opening must be high enough for the door to hang under the opening, since the door partially retracts into the hangar; for me at least, the installation is pretty complicated, with multiple tracks similar to garage door guides and lots of pulleys that that must be mounted to structure above & behind the door; my neighbor built his using regular yellow pine, which is rather prone to quick rot when used at grade level (IIRC, he said that the company recommends against using treated lumber because of the extra weight); Potential upsides: it can be opened with a simple hand cranked boat winch, and if you install ballast weights on the cable, you can almost open & close it without a winch; you get the shade from roughly half the door remaining outside the hangar. One thing to remember is that it's only the thickness of a 2x4 on edge. If wind is a serious concern, it might have problems in heavy wind. Then it weighs the same as untreated lumber. It also shrinks up quite a bit as it dries. john h mkIII Titus, Alabama ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Other Matronics Email List Services ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Post A New Message kolb-list@matronics.com UN/SUBSCRIBE http://www.matronics.com/subscription List FAQ http://www.matronics.com/FAQ/Kolb-List.htm Web Forum Interface To Lists http://forums.matronics.com Matronics List Wiki http://wiki.matronics.com Full Archive Search Engine http://www.matronics.com/search 7-Day List Browse http://www.matronics.com/browse/kolb-list Browse Digests http://www.matronics.com/digest/kolb-list Browse Other Lists http://www.matronics.com/browse Live Online Chat! http://www.matronics.com/chat Archive Downloading http://www.matronics.com/archives Photo Share http://www.matronics.com/photoshare Other Email Lists http://www.matronics.com/emaillists Contributions http://www.matronics.com/contribution ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- These Email List Services are sponsored solely by Matronics and through the generous Contributions of its members.
