That really sucks, Ralph. I feel for you. If it were mine, I would do the following to dissuade the a-holes from trying to sell their booty or use it in an as yet unregistered Exp A/B: 1) Post a free ad at barnstomers.com and also Craig's List, eBay or anywhere else that you can think of that an aircraft engine might appear for sale. 2) Advise all EAA chapters in the area. 3) Post at all the airports in the area. 4) Advise the FSDO and their inspectors. 5) Advise all the DARs in your region. If it was stolen to replace the engine in an SLSA, then it would require an A&P or Repair Station to do the install, so I would also contact all the FBOs and A&Ps you can find in your area. None of this will guarantee return of your stuff or apprehension of the culprits but anything you can do to squelch the a-holes' plans would be worth the effort, in my book. -------- Thom Riddle Buffalo, NY (9G0) Kolb Slingshot SS-021 Jabiru 2200A #1574 Tennessee Prop 64x32 Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work. - Thomas A. Ralph=2C You have my sympathies=2C too. I hate effin thieves. NO punishment is t oo harsh for them=2C IMO. Adding to what Thom said=2C I would also recommend the following=3B Since these losers often sacrifice cables=2C hoses=2C harnesses=2C etc=2C their haste=2C I would also contact EVERY "company=2C vendor=2C retail outlet=2C etc"=2C that sells replacement parts for items stolen. Ask the owner if they can notify you if someone within a 20 mile radius of you buys a likely related part. Often=2C once these vermin think they've gotten away with the crime=2C th ey start shopping around for the parts they either destroyed in the removal=2C or left behind (e.g. radi ators=2C oil coolers=2C etc) In this day and age of technology=2C the thief knows better that to post the engine=2C prop or anything with a traceable serial number=2C on Barnstormers=2C etc. Do Not look there for your parts. HOWEVER!!!!! Stealing your engine just MAY have been the financial boos t some POS needed to finally begin his build own project!! I would contact every airplane kit sales company that the 912 would be a good engine for. Here's another important point=3B This a.hole knows there ain't NO way h e can sell this engine whole!! This means he will either part it out (not likely)=2C or he will always mai ntain possession of it=2C and therefore he will restrict the access to the serial number. I would contact the FAA =2C and see if they can somehow notify the FBI if there are any 912 engines registered in your area for the next 1 2 months. The pig surely knows that in order to register a plane with the FAA=2C he will HAVE supply an en gine serial number. He will not give out an accurate number that can be traced=2C but rather he will be off several digits. If you do your homework=2C you WILL find out who these lowlifes are. The ir need to make use of their stolen merchandise can often be detected by watching when they buy replacem ents parts. Mike Welch Been ripped off=2C and caught 'em. > If it were mine=2C I would do the following to dissuade the a-holes from trying to sell their booty or use it in an as yet unregistered Exp A/B: > 1) Post a free ad at barnstomers.com and also Craig's List=2C eBay or any where else that you can think of that an aircraft engine might appear for s ale. > 2) Advise all EAA chapters in the area. > 3) Post at all the airports in the area. > 4) Advise the FSDO and their inspectors. > 5) Advise all the DARs in your region. > > If it was stolen to replace the engine in an SLSA=2C then it would requir e an A&P or Repair Station to do the install=2C so I would also contact all the FBOs and A&Ps you can find in your area. > > None of this will guarantee return of your stuff or apprehension of the c ulprits but anything you can do to squelch the a-holes' plans would be wort h the effort=2C in my book. > > -------- > Thom Riddle > Buffalo=2C NY (9G0) > Kolb Slingshot SS-021 > Jabiru 2200A #1574 > Tennessee Prop 64x32 > > Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls an d looks like work. > =C2 - Thomas A. You cannot step outside the Savoy these days without some ner-do-well remov ing your fingers- with a chain cutter to steal the rings from it. The Police will direct someone who asks the way down a dark alle y where they will be attacked, beaten up and robbed. They then share their il l gotten gains between them. The tourists `hot` spots like the Tower of London or Buckingham Palace are worst. I have myself been attacked by a `Beefeater` at the Tower. I was bat tered on the head and held at the point of a pike while another `Beefeater` colleague- robbed me. The only consolation is that everywhere else is so much worse. My wife had a Druid leap upon her while walking around Stonehenge and a turbulent pries t stole her handbag in Canterbury Cathedral. Other countries are much, much worse. Kolb list guys=2C It's interesting that this subject of aircraft theft is now pertinent on this list. The topic of aircraft security was just brought up on the Aeroelectric list a few days ago. My advice is=3B take the time to make a few official looking signs that a dvise ALL who enter into the areas they are being video taped!!! You don't even need to actually tape them.....just put the fear of God in them that the ar e on camera!! My sign would read as follows=3B ATTENTION!! YOU ARE BEING TAPED BY A HIDDEN CAMERA SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM. REMAINING IN THIS AREA FOR MORE THAN 3 MINUTES ACTIVATES A MODEM TO NOTIFY POLICE. YOU HAVE 2 1/2 MINUTES BEFORE THE POLICE ARE CONTACTED WITH THIS LOCATION!! GOOD BYE!! You don't actually have to have cameras. All you need to do is make them THINK you have cameras!! You can make a super easy=2C motion detecting=2C flashing LED li ght attention getter! Picture yourself as a thief....you walk up to a hangar=2C airplane=2C car ....whatever=2C and a motion light starts flashing and lights up illuminating that sign. There's only two ways they would stay there=3B no way & no how!! BTW=2C the thief that took your engine KNEW what you had!! He is going t o be a local airport bum=2C guaranteed!

" [quote][b] I'm not so sure that is accurate, Ralph's U-Tube video was a great advertisement for a motivated theft ring....as it showed his hanger and airport. When I post my first U-Tube Video it will be scant on location details. I will invest in a security camera as well.... Harbor Freight recently had a system with 4 cameras, a monitor, and a DVR for cheap [maybe less than $200]. A while back, I called a local alarm company and got them to give me about 10 old cameras with mounts that had been removed from a bank. We installed them all over our field [dummy cameras] along with a bunch of warning signs. It has worked so far. Shack do not archive In a message dated 5/18/2011 1:42:24 P.M. Ralph, Very sorry to hear this news. These guys cant understand the efforts that a home builder puts in to build these wonderful flying machines. As Ellery mentioned, If caught they should be hung upside down like a Wind Sock. Hopefully your insurance helps you some way. I will recommend you to post it on the other matronics lists too so that you can build awareness among fellow builders. Wish you the best! Shack=2C Kolb guys=2C Years ago I owned a "Tire & Brake" business. Harbor Freight sells fake security cameras=2C with a red blinking LED light on the front. I mounted a couple of them on the outside of my shop. Never had a problem. I'm sure if Ralph and his buddy had a couple of these fakes mounted in plain view=2C we wouldn't be having this converstion! : ( IIRC=2C those make-believe cameras were only a few dollars=2C maybe $10 e a. Maybe with some padding, I don't want the cuffs to hurt very much. They might distract his attention from the art work I would be doing on his legs 'n stuff with a propane torch.
