Hi Folks:
Just had an Angus Burger at McDonald's in beautiful downtown Laramie, WY.
If
you have never visited Laramie, you have not missed a thing. They do have
a
good FBO with computer, but the monitor is out of focus. When I sat down t
o
read my email and check weather, I thought something was wrong with my eyes
.
Maybe I will get used to everything being fuzzy.
Got out of Goodland, KS, at 1100 this morning. Was grateful for flyable we
ather
as far as Laramie. Did about 260 miles in 3 hours. Last 40 miles went fro
m 110
to 60 mph ground speed. That is depressing. Starting to get accustomed to
flying in higher winds, like 15 to 25, gusting to 35 mph. The second day o
f
flying, these winds were making me very uncomfortable. I have only gotten
two
full days of flying out of 6. Normally, this trip takes a total of 4 days.
Worst case, up until this trip, was 5 dzys. Will be setting a record this
time.
Last Wednesday I got out of Neosho, MO, at 0700. Flew two hours and landed
in
very high winds at Rick Girard's airstrip. Spent a couple hours with Rick
and
the wind started slacking off enough to get back in the air. Refueled at G
reat
Bend, KS, then headed out for Goodland. I was within 15 minutes of Goodlan
d
Airport when I very large black thunderstorm hit Goodland. I was about 25
miles
SE and the winds were very strong and turbulent. I had bypassed Oakley Air
port
a while back, but couldn't get back there in the headwind. Kept a nice slo
w
left hand turn to the south until I found a good section of dirt road and a
north/south intersection. All the road, mostly dirt, are orientated NS/EW.
The
wind was honking out of the SE, making for an interesting landing on the mu
ddy
road. There was a farm house at the intersection, and I followed a truck i
nto
the yard and up next to a barn. Told the farmer my problem and he asked me
to
move over to a wind break of cedar trees. !
Got the mkIII double tied down before the thunderstorm hit. Spent a coup
le
hours with Kim and Shaun in their home until the rain slacked off, then hea
ded
for Goodland. Nice to know there are folks that will still take strangers
right
off the road and into their homes.
Weather my be doable in the morning if I get out of here really early, like
first light. I'll do some more homework on the weather before I decide on
my
route to the Rock House. There is an alternate route through Pocatello, ID
,
that I might be able to do, or my original planned route through Evanston,
WY,
Heber City, UT, Provo, UT, and Wendover, UT.
Will have to play this trip by ear, one leg at a time, as weather and winds
permit, but I will eventually get to Larry and Karen Cottrel's.
Physically, for a 72 year old, I am doing great despite the bad wind and
weather. All these weather days play games mentally. I have to be very ca
reful
not to made dumb decisions. Sometimes it is very difficult not to be dumb.
;-)
Having fun on my first long XC in two years,

I got out of Laramie, WY, this morning. Nothing will get me flying faster than
having to pay $75.00 to sleep in somebody elses bed for another night.
Weather was marginal looking, winds blowing the wrong way, rain, turbulence, and
cold temps. I had to climb to 10,000 feet to get out of turbulence on the way
from Laramie to Rawlins, WY. OAT was 28F. Don't know what it was inside,
but I have no cabin heat and I left my Chilli Vest (12vdc vest) at home. I did
have enough sense to bring a pair of thermals, thinsulate turtle neck shirt,
and boot socks. Also remembered my thinsulate flying gloves I bought for my
first flight to Alaska in 1994. Stayed comfortable except the feet. Numb when
I landed at Rawlins. Rawlins is a good place to stop as is Evanston, WY.
My sister lives 37 miles from here in Morgan, UT. They are on the way to pick
me up. I'll leave the mkIII tied down at Evanston for a few days while I visit.
I am about a half day from the Rock House. I can make it in two legs, Jackpot,
NV, then the Rock House.
Depending on the weather and wind, I may fly to Wendover, UT, then Elko, NV, and
either Winnemucca, NV, or direct to the Rock House from Elko, as I did two years
ago.
I had some tough headwinds from Laramie to Rock Springs. Down to 35 mph once.
Spent time at 45 and 50, mostly 60 and 65 mph ground speed. That makes for long
legs when you are also freezing. ;-(
I flew WOT 5500 rpm much of the first leg and then 5200 and 5400 the second leg
this morning. Finally got a little help from the wind from Rock Springs to Evanston.
Lot of weather in the Rockies. Flew through several rain showers, but they were
light.
Good to be on the ground for a couple days with family.
This is the end of day 8. A normal flight from Alabama to the Rock House is 4
days.
Brother Jim has been camping in his RV at Homer Kolb's for a couple weeks. He
will be there for another week or so. I called to let him know where I was and
got a chance to talk with Marcus Kolb. All are well. Good to talk with Marcus.
Take care,

John is in Evanston Wy for the next few days. He got a window this
morning and hit the skies, going through Rawlings, Rock Springs,
Kemmerer, and then to Evanston. He is being picked up by his sister who
lives in Utah. He will likely post later, but he thought he might take a
nap first.
Its been raining all morning long, strangest thing for this section of
the Desert.

Finally got the beast home....it looks grand, it has the engineering of a Sherman
Tank and a heart of a Volkswagen Beetle. Even with a 60 to 1 reduction drive
unit plus a 48 tooth sprocket and 20 tooth sprocket the 1/2 horse power single
phase electric motor could not handle the 700# door. Only option a larger
3/4 or 1 or 2 horse power motor. ka-ching ! ka-ching! ....it's only money !
Next weekend wall removal and Bi/Fold installation. Stay Tuned !
