From: "Thumper" It is getting hot here in the south and I was wondering if anyone has flown their Mark III with the doors off. Any handling issues I might see? Love the open air and visibility of my previous Firestar with no doors. Any Ideas. Anyone have pictures of what they use to hold the doors up while on the ground? I need to do something fast. I am picturing small lift struts at the front of each door then close the door just before takeoff. Any pictures and details would be appreciated. I'm sure there are plenty of you who have something that works for you. From: Robert Laird I've flown many hours without the doors on my MkIIIC... can't tell a whit of difference with them on, or off (except it's a bit windier in the cockpit). Some people claim that if you have a panel behind you, you can't fly it with the door off.... but I have a lexan panel behind me, and it doesn't seem to matter. -- Robert On Wed, Jun 8, 2011 at 10:07 AM, Thumper wrote: > > It is getting hot here in the south and I was wondering if anyone has flown > their Mark III with the doors off. From: "Thom Riddle" To avoid paying high prices for pneumatic lift struts, I found a much cheaper and simpler alternative. Boats sometimes have hatches held open with springs which are stiff enough to stay in column unless you push on them in the middle, when they collapse. I bought one from West Marine for about $11, tried it and liked so bought another for the other door. This was on a Rans S6, not my Slingshot. Here is a link to a fancier model than the ones I used but the principle is the same. http://tinyurl.com/3heae4g -------- Thom Riddle Buffalo, NY (9G0) Kolb Slingshot SS-021 Jabiru 2200A #1574 Tennessee Prop 64x32 Truth is what stands the test of experience. - Albert Einstein Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=342427#342427 ________________________________ Message 6 _____________________________________ Time: 11:31:07 AM PST US Subject: Kolb-List: original Firestar 1 wieght and balance From: "Lonewolf1" Hi everyone. Thanks for all your input. It's great to have people with lot's of t time in the seat to ask advice of.I want to double check the weight and balance on my early Firestar 1.Anybody have any info?Travis at kolb couldn't help me....THX -------- Ron Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=342428#342428 ________________________________ Message 7 _____________________________________ Time: 11:57:47 AM PST US Subject: Kolb-List: Re: original Firestar 1 wieght and balance From: "Thom Riddle" I dug up some old, but probably not very useful information on the first early (unregistered) Firestar I had. I did not weigh it properly (tail up) but rather in three-point stance and it was not entirely empty when I weighed it. Right Main 148 lb. Left Main 137 lb. Tail Wheel 52 lb. Total w/ 19 lb of fuel on board was 337 lb. so empty was about 318 lb. This Firestar had a 377 engine with 2 blade 60" IVO, pull start, canister BRS. My second early Firestar weighed in at 362 lb empty w/ 447 and a lot of do-dads on it including long gear legs and much nicer interior. Its empty weight moment was 13,466 in-pounds. Don't recall what the datum was for sure but think it was the mail wheel axles. Both airplanes flew very well with no pitch stability or weight and balance problems at all with either a light or heavy pilot. -------- Thom Riddle Buffalo, NY (9G0) Kolb Slingshot SS-021 Jabiru 2200A #1574 Tennessee Prop 64x32 Truth is what stands the test of experience. - Albert Einstein Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=342431#342431 ________________________________ Message 8 _____________________________________ Time: 02:06:55 PM PST US From: "Larry Cottrell" Subject: Kolb-List: Rock house Fly-in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTLBaNhf0s0 Things are going well, every one is having a great time. The weather is cooperating a bit better, although there are still a few squalls that are going through. We, John H,Roger Hankins, Mike Marker, and Gary Haley decided to check out the Jordan Craters Lave Flow, and continue on down to Owyhee State Airstrip. As you most all know this spring has been a bit generous to us here in the West, and it is very obvious from the air. All the "Old timers" back to Grandfathers cannot remember this much water. The Owyhee Basin is now up to 700 percent of normal. The Owyhee River reflects that. The Reservoir serves an irrigation function for the "Treasure Valley". It was a bit bumpy, but none of us could resist.
