Thanks! The Good Lookin' Old Poop said dinner was almost ready, but I knew it was
a Kodak Moment, and headed for the strip anyway.

Subject: | Re: Tail replace/repair |
Nate,
I have the early model and my buddy has the later model Kolb tail weldment
assembly. I will try to relate what I see as the difference.
The early model Kolbs used a tail weldment that consisted of a vertical
tube and two horizontal tubes. The horizontal tubes are positioned inside
the boom tube against the top and bottom and riveted to the boom tube
lengthwise.
The later version uses the ring, which is inserted into the boom tube and
riveted around the circumference.
This change was made to eliminate the step of removing the pin that
connects the elevator horn to the elevator controller mechanism, in order to fold
the tail, on the early style. The newer ring type has a pivoting joint
that allows folding, without having to remove a pin.
The elevators for the ring type use a different type of horn and I'm not
sure if the early elevators could be retrofitted.
There is also a difference in the design of the horizontal stabilator, at
the inboard aft end. I think this was to give clearance for the pivoting
joint. The early model has the corner tubes butted together at a right
angle, while the ring type has a gap there. I don't think they would be
interchangeable. If you were to install the new ring type on an early model,
you
may have to build new, or modify the existing, horizontal stabilators.
Hope this helps a little bit,

doesn't have the ring
