Well it was an interesting evening here, last. The short story is that I lost power on climb out at about 300 ft. Had a hell of a cross wind that had me crabbed about 30 degrees already so I only had another 150 degrees of the impossible turn left. I made the turn all right, but without time for a sufficient flair and ripped the left main gear off. I don't know the extent of the damage yet, it could be an easy fix or the fuselage truss may be junk. I hope I can salvage it, just have to wait and see. The good thing is I got away without a scratch, although I can feel a twinge in my right clavicle area. Probably just pulled a muscle. CRAP! Hi all, For those that are interested, type in Firestar II Numidia Pa to watch a few short videos on YouTube. The last ten seconds of the flight over the Donaho is my house and garage. Just a glimpse as I was banking a left turn away from the mountain. Enjoy Lanny N598LF PS I didn`t send a link, because I didn`t know how, without sending four different e-mails.

The cage I bought to use on my MkIII looked about like that when I got it. You will need at least one socket tube and a bag o cutoff disks. Usually the associated little brace tubes pop off at the welds. You can bend them right back and reweld. Any idea of the lost power cause? List, I have been in lurk for a while, but have a situation where I could use advice. I had 170 hours on the 447 and decided to have a " pro" do my 150 hour insp. I used an authorized LEAF mechanic. It was about 3 weeks before I could reinstall the engine so I put a little 2-stroke in each plug hole to help lube and prevent corrosion. I had trouble starting because the plugs were apparently fouled with the oil. I finally got her running and was trying to adjust the ivo prop. got it up to 6200 rpms and she QUIT. I dont think I got it too hot but maybe its possible it was not warmed up enough! Maybe its possible the plugs fouled ??? Or not?? She seemed to shut off pretty quick , but started back up. I dont know where to start, as I fear it may be cold seizure . Will a compression check verify anything? Any thoughts? Ed ( In Houston Firefly 62 )

Pilot error. I'm pretty sure the toggle switch for the boost pump got set to off when I did a mag check. That's the hardest thing to swallow about the whole thing. Roy, It started back up after it died so it must have spark. It SEEMS to run OK but Im afraid to take to the air. I would like to know if it was cold seizure! I will check for a loose wire and check the engine kill wire. Ed ( in Hou FF62) In a message dated 7/4/2011 12:57:38 P.M. Take off the exhaust manifold at the port and examine the side of the piston. If it seized that's where you'll find the damage. You're looking for vertical streaks or scratches. If you find evidence one or both pistons seized you can use Muriatic (concrete etch) acid on a rag to clean off the aluminum on the cylinder walls. Be careful to only get it on the iron cylinder liner. You'll need to replace both pistons, too. Ed, that's pretty much the nature of a cold seizure. A little cooling and they pop loose. They ALWAYS seize again. Don't chance it, pull the exhaust Y and look at the piston, it's the only way to know for sure and it takes less than an hour. Greetings List=2C I also am having an issue with my engine. I have a 503 DCDI in a Firestar ll. I have a reading of 310 and 210 on the CHT gauge. The readings do change in flight however the difference between readings is in the neighborhood of 90 to 110 degrees. I am concerned about the variable in tem ps. Can the temps really be that different? My EGT is showing 1100/1050. This is w ith the RPMs at 5500. What may be causing the lower reading on the one cylinder? Kurt Firestar ll 503 DCDI Utah

Hello to all, First time here as a poster. Actually it took a few weeks to find this all Kolb forum. I am 70 yr old. I have a private pilot lic. I have not flown for some 35 years. I am now doing a re-entry. I have flown piper and cessnas. Back then there was no ul or lsa around. I have about decided on a Kolb. Because of the folding wings , trailerability. Now which model. I am undicided about a single place or 2 place. I am all ears about the Kolb if anyone wants to bend my ear a little. Thanks ss568 :D Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=344896#344896

I was invited to fly with a friend in his Sky Ranger to the 60th annual July 4th pancake b'fast this morning... early. It is about 87 miles from my home airport so it was a bit far to fly in my Kolb for an early b-fast, so I agreed to fly with him in his SkyRanger. Two short clips taken from 5,500' msl (roughly 4,500' agl) which clearly show how much better the viz from a Kolb is. Since the SkyRanger cruises about 110 mph it made the early morning b-fast flight doable. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srDOzeJDWPM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Kw9q2z2c3U I hope to fly there (Finger Lakes) this summer in the Slingshot and will take some more/better/longer videos. -------- Thom Riddle Buffalo, NY (9G0) Kolb Slingshot SS-021 Jabiru 2200A #1574 Tennessee Prop 64x32 Truth is what stands the test of experience. - Albert Einstein Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=344897#344897

If your spark plugs look the same in both cylinders and the EGT`s are the same for both cylinders. You may have a bad CHT gauge or sending unit. You can switch the sending unit wires on the back of the gauge, and see if the readings reverse themselves. Hope this helps. Thom... What are you CHT's at cruise?? And are these the back 2 cylinders?? (closest to the prop?) Also I have been comparing your rpm/gph findings with mine and find the fuel burn is very close to the same as yours at those rpm settings ! chris ambrose M3X/Jabiru A 2200 194 .hrs N327CS Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=344923#344923

They all fly similarly, but the general feeling is different inasmuch as the Firestars with their narrow cockpit give a different sensory experience than the MKIII variants with their wide cockpits and room to dump stuff in the seat next to you. Also when taking off and landing, the MKIII variants feel wide and "planted," while the Firestar variants feel narrower, and a bit more teetery on their narrower gear. Landing my MKIII seems almost a no-brainer in taildragger terms, while the FSII is more classic taildragger, if you are not on your game, it is more likely to let you know it. A lot depends on if you like to haul "stuff" around with you when you fly. The one is narrow and ergonomically challenging if you like a lot of electronic bells and whistles, the other has lots more room, panel, and places for electronic junk to be mounted. I have equal access to a FSII with a Rotax 582 and a MKIII Classic with a Rotax 582, both handle similarly in the air, the FSII will fly the same speed as the MKIII at about 4-500 rpm less due to it's cleaner fuselage shape. Which works out to about 1 GPH less in fuel burn, and less in flight noise from the slower prop. But I fly the MKIII anyway, I just like it a bit better. Purely subjective. http://vimeo.com/25984425 I was finally able to get up in the mountains to the South of here. It was one of those rare days when the wind was calm up high. A very nice flight indeed. The area is called Oregon Canyons. It starts in Nevada and comes some 45 or so miles into Oregon. The illegal's are fond of planting Pot farms there and it can get pretty exciting sometimes. The flight was 1.5 hours long and I burned 5 gallons of gas. I ran at mostly max cruise with very little climb most of the time trying to get up the mountain. Of course high density altitude and no little sink in a lot of places. I of course will have to go back a few times to get familiar with the area. It would be nice to find a spot to hunt Elk with my bow this fall, and that is all the excuse I will need to fly it. You can also put the sensors in boiling water to see if they read 212. If they read properly, when was the last time you balanced the carbs? Do you run separate air filters. I'm assuming K & N here, try cleaning and reoiling. Are you the original owner of the engine? If not, check that jets are the same, clip is in the same slot on the needle for both carbs. Last, look for air leaks in the carb boots. Take them off and look at the inside in a strong light. If you haven't changed them in a few years, do yourself a favor and order new from JBM. You could also have a crack in the rubber seal on the piston of a starting carburetor (erroneously called a choke). Hi Guys, The scoops on my Jabiru are certainly non-standard, they are for a trike and I also have a prop extension. The scoops go around a body so they spread out at the front. But it gives a nice area to put the oil cooler if I want one. Before I put the extension on the prop the distance between the back end of the scoop and the prop was about 1/2 inch, now it 4 inches! Not the best at sucking the air thru the tube, so it get hot fast.. If I don't get the temps down quickly, I'll buy normal scoops going all the way to the prop.. EXPERIMENTAL takes on a new meaning.. Fly safe. FrankD Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=344935#344935
