Subject: | FAA registration renewal |
NOT KOLB SPECIFIC
Last week I got the notice from the FAA that my registration was going to expire
June 30 this year. It also said that they must receive my $5 before April 30
this year to keep the registration active. I decide to go ahead and pay it now.
A few days later, I saw that my registration on the FAA database was updated
but it now expires JAN 30, 2015.
This means that if you renew your registration early you loose that time before
the next renewal is due. It is not a big deal monetarily but it is stupid and
wrong for them to do that. It appears that even if you wait until the last minute
(2 months before expiration), you will still loose 2 months. Bottom line
is that the 3 year renewal requirement is actually 2 yrs 10 months at the most.
Live and learn.

Thom
Good information. I just changed my address on my Kolb with them almost two
years ago so my registration should be good for another year but I just got
my renewal notice also for 6/30/12. I don't want to wait till the last
minute and forget but.....
I wonder if we could send in the documentation and check dated April 30?

Hi folks...sorry it took me so long to respond. Many of you have probably read
the threads on the EAA Forums, but since many of you probably don't visit that
forum, I wanted to say hi here.
If you haven't heard of me or met me, let me do a quick intro...Chad Jensen, Manager
of Communities and Homebuilders Community Manager at EAA. I'm a homebuilder.
Built/flew/sold my RV-7, now building a Wittman Tailwind, and have plans
for a Legal Eagle. I have a huge interest in light aircraft and ultralights, so
I want you guys to know that you can call or email any time, and I will be more
than happy to talk about and listen to your concerns.
Many of you probably know Timm Bogenhagen here at EAA. He is our resident ultralight
guy and is on the Ultralight Council. He and I talk all the time about
the lighter side.
We finally have representation at the senior leadership level too! Rod selected
me to sit at the table to represent the divisions and councils. Something long
overdue.
Please shoot me an email, give me a call, or stop and say hi if we run in to one
another at Oshkosh this summer!

Rick,
Don't know. My address did not change so I did the renewal on-line. The on-line
renewal probably does this short-change act without human input and could probably
be fixed with a little tweaking of their program. It will be interesting
to see if the renewals done by USPS get the same short-change treatment or are
handled by humans bright enough to know that a 3 year renewal period begins
at the expiration of the prior one.

I cruise between 75 and 85 depending on rpm setting and how I want to push it.
this is with a Jabiru 2200. I usually fly around 80 as an average middle of
the road rpm/airspeed.

Subject: | Re: FAA registration renewal |
Since the re-registration topic has come up, I want to remind all of you
with E-LSA airworthiness certificates for your Kolbs to, under no
circumstances, fail to re-register on time. As I've reported here before,
the law of unintended consequences, or Murphy's Law, kicked in here and if
you allow your registration to expire there is no way to register it again.
The forms, most notably 8050-88A, have been revised and no longer have the
grandfathering provision they had until January 31, 2008. Now the only ways
to register an E-LSA, per FAR 21.191 i(2) and i(3) are to build an exact
copy of a qualifying S-LSA (the i(2) provision) or demote an S-LSA to E-LSA
(i(3)). Even if you get your registration period trimmed from 36 months to
34, that's only 28 cents to keep your aircraft from being an assembly of
parts or a lawn ornament. As they say in Pat Ladd's country "penny wise and
pound foolish".

I'll bet 2 to 1 the date never gets checked. I've seen this a dozen times. They'll
just cash it now.
