    Subject: Monument Valley
Hi All, A while ago one of our leading flying magazines ran quite a large article entitled Small airplanes in Big Places. This was about several CT`s (a rather upmarket and expensive plastic plane if you are not familiar) which is available is Light Plane or Microlight specification. Mainly a matter of weight. This group had flown across some rough country, Grand Canyon, Bryce, Monument Valley etc.and much was made of their flight. I wrote to the Editor and pointed out that their exploits should be measured against the Kolb Monument Valley Fly In. My letter is reproduced below. I had forgotten all about it, even the name of the mag. but today received a post from the Editor asking if I had any pics. and details I have replied telling him that there are good pics and blogs around and asking for an address to send them to. If he goes for that I will post the address etc. This is just a heads up to give you a chance to get together something if he decides to go for it. I certainly don`t feel qualified after only one visit, and that by car. This is a good chance to put Kolbs on the map, particularly here in the UK where there are very few. It is a top class magazine with very good pictures and would give any of your pics a first class showing. Pat Sir, regarding your article about the CT on long flights. I thought you might be interested in a group of Kolb microlight pilots who fly from various points in the US to Monument Valley each year to the Unorganised Kolb Annual Fly in. One or two trail their planes in but the majority fly very long. distances. They camp at Gouldings and fly the surrounding spectacular John Wayne countryside early morning and evening and hangar fly during the heat of the day. There is usually a BBQ get together each night. I managed to make it to Monument Valley for the Fly In while touring by car a few years ago. A great occasion.. Perhaps the doyen is John Hauck who flies from his base in Alabama. He is no stranger to long distance flights in his Kolb Mark 3 as seventeen years ago he flew his first trip from his base to Alaska. Flying 17400 miles in 41 days with 232 hours flight time. His engine is a Rotax 912 of 80 horse power and during the flight he used two sets of plugs with two oil changes. He has done this trip several times since up to Barrow Point and diverts widely to visit friends en route. He carried full camping equipment and landed on logging roads to refuel at roadside garages. He carries a rifle and a handgun among his stores. Not he says for protection from bears but from the loggers.

Hi All, (Monument Vallet follow up) this brings things up to date as far as I am concerned. I shall send a photo of my Xtra but the rest is up to you. I know there are some spectacular pics. out there. I would reiterate that this is not some tatty club newsletter but a real top class widely distributed well printed glossy magazine. Pat I think that the first, rather nonsensical line in his post means that Richard Fairbairn is sufficient e-mail address. ----- Original Message ----- From: Richard Fairbairn Sent: Friday, January 20, 2012 3:06 AM Subject: Re: Small aircraft in big places This email is fine chap! A piccy of you would be great, to accompany your letter. I was thinking it would be a great feature to include in the future, so if the Us guys have a stack it would be brill to see some, and get a feel for what we could do. On 20 Jan 2012, at 10:48, Pat Ladd wrote: Hi, thanks for your post. I don`t have any very good pics about although I could of course supply one of me with my Kolb at the farm strip in Wiltshire I fly from. However there are some good pics and blogs of the Monument Valley Fly-Ins floating around. The easiest way perhaps is for me to put a heads up on the Kolb List and ask anyone with interesting stuff to send it to you direct. Do you have an e-mail address to which you would like stuff sent? Unfortunately I have passed on my copy of your magazine and only have the address on your post. There are some amazing stories to be told. The FAA is going contrary to their regs, if I am reading them right. Here is the web page: http://www.faa.gov/licenses_certificates/aircraft_certification/aircraft_registry/reregistration/ The first paragraph on the page reads thusly: "Re-Registration and Renewal of Aircraft Registration This Final Rule was published in the Federal Register on July 20, 2010, Page 41968. All changes established by this rule are effective October 1, 2010. This rule establishes specific registration expiration dates over a three-year period for all aircraft registered before October 1, 2010, and requires re-registration of those aircraft according to a specific schedule. All aircraft registrations issued on or after October 1, 2010, will be good for three years with the expiration date clearly shown. " Then you get half way down the page and find this: "Aircraft registration issued due to renewal expires three years from the expiration date of the previous certificate." That isn't what they are doing, here is their phone number - (866) 762-9434 -------- Richard Pike Kolb MKIII N420P (420ldPoops) richard (at) bcchapel(dot)org Kingsport, TN 3TN0 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Richard, Thanks for doing that. The reply, if you get one, should be interesting even if not helpful. Or they could surprise us and recognize their error, and correct it for you. Then comes the onslaught from others whose "renewal" was mis-figured. I suspect the automatic process of on-line renewal was programmed wrong, out of ignorance or mis-understanding on the part of the programmer. If this is the case, then it would be fairly simple to fix. -------- Thom Riddle Buffalo, NY (9G0) Kolb Slingshot SS-021 Jabiru 2200A #1574 Tennessee Prop 64x32 Truth is what stands the test of experience. - Albert Einstein Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=364384#364384

Can anybody describe this? steel or aluminum? Thru holes with long bolts? Or is the spacer bolted to the engine hub and then drilled and tapped for the propeller? What bolts are used? Source for bolts? Thanks Tom Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=364389#364389

My spacer is made from aluminum, ( I don`t know what grade). Prop and spacer are held onto the prop flange with six long AN bolts, safety wired. Too cold (17 degrees) and dark to go measure them tonight. If you need their length, let me know and I will measure them tomorrow and get back to you. I can also take a picture if you need it. I missed a part. It`s CRUSH PLATE, then the prop and spacer. Bolts stick out the back of the prop flange exposing two or three threads. Lanny FSII
