<jack.lockamy@navy.mil> Hi Russ, Ride is approx. 1900 miles (30 HRS) EACH WAY! Key West, FL to Iron Mountain, MI. Once off the Keys Overseas Hwy (US1), it's I-75 north to MI and back... Will be stopping in ATL on the way up to drop off a set of floats and picking up another set of floats in lower MI on the return South with a quick stop in London, KY to visit the good folks at the Kolb Factory (if they're back from SNF 2012 in Lakeland). Russ, Sorry to say this but your "Google Translate" Spanish is incorrect. Hueso is Spanish for the English word Bone. <jack.lockamy@navy.mil> A note on the word "Key" used to identify an island. Its origin is not well established except by usage. Most believe that it began by the Spanish adapting the word "cayo' from the Taino Indians of Hispanola and Cuba referring to small islands. The Spanish normally used "isla" for island and "islet" for small island. At least in the New World, they appear to use "cayo" and "cayuelo" for a very small island. The English used "Cay" or "Kay" such as Cay Sal Banks. Cay is pronounced by Americans as the letter "K," but by Englishmen as the word 'Key.' I am not certain if the written and the pronounced versions made any difference. Anyway, English maps of the Keys made just prior to the Revolutionary War of 1776 used the word "Key." A Colonial American court record of the "Libel of Dennis and Allen vs the snow St. Fermin alias Britanis" in 1744 used the word "Keys" referring to the Florida Keys. This is one case where an American court reporter might write ''Key' when an Englishmen prounced 'Cay.' See the Admiralty Papers, Vol. 2, 1743 -1744. Jack in Key West DO NOT ARCHIVE

<jack.lockamy@navy.mil> And finally, "For history purposes, Lt. Perry did cause a minor confusion. He renamed Cayo Hueso (Key West) to "Thompson's Island" for the Secretary of the Navy Smith Thompson and the harbor "Port Rogers" for the president of the Board of Navy Commissioners. As to the name Key West, there is little doubt that it was some form of translation from the Spanish 'Cayo' (Key) and 'Hueso', if indeed the name was Hueso. The Spanish word Hueso [Way-so] means bone in English. The Seminole Indians of Florida has used the area around Key West as burial ground thus the "bones". A few believe that it came from the seven-year apple tree found in the Keys, which was also called hueso by the Spanish. Regardless of its origin, the name Key West prevailed with time. I am currently flying my ultrastar with the original Cuyuna, but am using an old Pterodactyl 4 belt re-drive. The pulleys are wearing out a bit,and was wondering of all the mechanics on the list if someone has one stuffed in a corner of the shop. Main and/or engine pulley would be great. Mine is OK for now, just looking for a back up set.....Thanks Mark in Florida

Thom Sorry to say but the key was named for the large amounts of bones there. It's Cayo Hueso, nothing to do with west -- except in English. I don't need Google to translate for me. Subject: Re: Cable Tightness
    From: "David d." <david@PaulowniaTrees.com>
An update on my elevator problem. I got a new larger cable with new clamps and thimbles. The larger (1/8 inch) will help with stretch. However when I took off the old cable, it was twisted or wound up about 5 to 8 turns. On checking the turnbuckle it was unevenly threaded. The safety wire was good and tight and in place. The most thread showing was on the cable end of the the t.b. I would guess that whom ever installed the cable and turnbuckle, allowed the cable end to rotate as they tightened. Upon checking further there was only one thread holding the turnbuckle at the cable end. One thread is not much to be flying around with. Needless to say my thumper skipped a few. The factory build manual may warn of this, but if not check your buckles. A small tool can be inserted in the cable end to prevent it from rotating as you tighten. At least check your buckles for even threads on each end. David d. -------- Kolb Mark IIIX 582 Blue head Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=369572#369572
