I made a mistake on the left wing. I overlapped t he fabric to far on the trailing edge. I called Stewart Systems and they told me to use lacquer thinner by brushing it on the fabric where I needed to pull it loose so I could re-cut it. After letting it soak for about a minute, the fabric pulled up so I could cut it. I let the area dry and used an iron set at 250 degrees and simply ran it over the fabric to glue it back down. I don't thi nk that you can do that with any other system. During that flight I discovered the carb boots were starting to fail and the Titan Exhaust System, 147.0 hours, was also failing. Was fortunate to be able to make the remainder of my flight home safely, after spending a day and night waiting out thunderstorms at Headland Airport, Alabama. Called Titan about my problem. Jay told me to return the exhaust system for repair. This morning I found out they made me a new system modified to my specifications. That was mighty nice of them to do that. The major problem was the small stop welded on each of the 4 exhaust pipes. There was not enough area to prevent the exhaust springs from pulling the silencer inlet tubes into and/or over the exhaust pipe stop. I asked them to weld a 360 degree bushing stop on each pipe to give more bearing surface, which Jay said they did. A month is a long time to wait on a repair, but a new modified system takes a little of the sting out of that long wait. john h mkIII Titus, Alabama ________________________________ Message 7 _____________________________________ Time: 10:27:33 AM PST US Subject: Kolb-List: I have a Dream From: "Dennis Thate" That the Rotax 503 replacement would look like this ; With one moving part, the hybrid electric EViation Drive ... I am almost finished with it but for filling, sanding, primer, and paint. I used Burt Rutan's moldless composite construction techniques with styrofoam and Rohocell foam as the core materials. The windshield cap was the hardest part to do, taking three tries before I got a shape I liked and a good blend to the windshield. Just for grins I weighed it and the lexan and aluminum center section for my Mk 3C. The composite part weighs 6 lb. 9 oz. at this point, the aluminum and lexan part, without a windshield cap, weighs 6 lb. 5 oz. I estimate the finished composite part will weigh 8 lbs finished and painted. From: "Dennis Thate" Heres the RUS update I sent to the Recreational Aviation Foundation. What a week! As earlier reported, the Democrat leadership tried to strip the RUS bill out of Game and Fish Committee as unrelated to the work of the Committeebut since the Minnesota Recreational Use Statute was WRITTEN by the Game and Fish Committee back in 1965, Senator Carlson was able to petition the Chairman to put it back in. In Mid-week, the Minnesota Bar Association wanted to add clarifying language to the bill as to what is and is not non-commercial. They posed a number of questions as to what is commercial and what is notIs a spray operation commercial? What if someone wants to land there on a charter flightis that commercial? What if a flight instructor and student want to land there? We conferred via telephone, and I suggested that MN/DOT Aeronautics already defined commercial operationsand that each person engaging in commercial operations had to have a State license. If that definition is good enough for MN/DOT, we could adopt it in the bill. They were satisfiedbut wanted to add staffed to the airport definition. After conferring with RAF, we did not object. On Friday, there was a joint House-Senate Conference Committee to resolve the different language in the bill. I was asked to provide testimonystarting at 5 p.m. The House was pulling an all-nighter to finish businessso the House members of the Conference Committee had to adjourn to the House each time a vote was calledextending the Committee time. They had been in session until 3:15 a.m. the night beforeso tempers ran a bit high. I was finally called to testify at 10:30 p.m. I explained the RUSthat it offered no protection if a charge was made, or if a landowner overtly created a hazard. The questions from the committee members again centered on what is and is not non-commercialso I explained that the issue was more incumbent on the LAND OWNER running a commercial operation than having a commercial pilot land there. That seemed to satisfy thembut the Chairman wanted to add additional language. The lawyer for the Minnesota Bar Association sat down beside me and said Mr. Hansons description hit it out of the parka short definition of the Recreational Use Statute, and what is and is not a commercial operation. We have no problem with this language, and believe that any other definition is not necessary. We had to wait for testimony, questions, changes, and votes on the rest of the almost 100 page bill, but it passed the committee and was referred to the House for a vote on the Senate changes. We got home at 1:30 a.m. I just received an E-mailThe bill passedon the way to the Governor! :D -------- Both optimists and pessimists contribute to our society.
