Here is a Firefly built by Brian Melborn for a customer in 2004.
I had the opportunity to fly it at Sun and Fun 2004.
Trying to remember correctly. Think I flew Don G's Firefly many years
ago before he painted it in the flag scheme. Don was gracious enough to
put me up for the night on a return flight from Oshkosh. Have no idea
what year that was.

The two Fireflys mentioned above are easy to get mixed up due to the very si
milar paint. The one built by Don G and now owned my Mr Kulp has the single w
ing strut instead of the stock double strut. Just adds to the overall sexine
ss. =F0=9F=98=9C
Both birds are near perfect.

I met Don G at the Midwest Light Sport Expo in Mt Vernon, IL. We were
talking to the owner of another Firefly that was on display at the show.
He mentioned his modifications to the wing struts.
The Firefly I flew was right at 254 built with no brakes etc. How would
a Firefly handle at gross weight of 500 lbs? Would be easy to get to
that 500 lbs with me at 170 lbs plus 10 gallons of fuel and a Rotax 503.

My thoughts on the subject.
If I had a 503 on the shelf and was trying to decide which of these to build and
knew the Fly was going to be operated at gross weight and over powered, I would
definitely choose the Firestar. Why not have a safety cushion and the extra
lift of the 28 foot wing.
A 503 powered Firestar is a rocket and nearly as sporty as the firefly. You would
also have room for more than 10 gallons of fuel.
My 2 cents. Make cheques payable too.....

No doubt on the power. These Fireflies are little rocket ships with a Rotax 447.
No concerns about structural strength when flying at gross or somewhat over (500
lbs).
I'd like to put a 10 gallon tank in a Firefly along with a 503 (because I already
have a good 503 that is still pretty new). I weigh about 175 so I'd be close
to gross weight with 10 gallons (full fuel for a cross country).

Firefly handle at gross weight of 500 lbs? Would be easy to get to that 500
lbs with me at 170 lbs plus 10 gallons of fuel and a Rotax 503.

Subject: | Re: Firefly vs Firestar |
Dennis,
Thanks for the input. That's pretty much what I've been thinking but I want to
fully explore the Firefly before I rule it out. I've seen quite a few Fireflies
that are built with many options and they still seem to fly good. The single
strut Flagfly is apparently around 300 lbs empty and is said to handle the
weight quite well.
I believe the dual carb 503 weighs about 12 lbs more than a 447. I could maybe
convert it to single card and save a few lbs. Also, with a 10 gallon tank you
don't have to fill it for local flying which is what I do most often.
I do like the option of the second seat (although very tight). I have 2 boys and
it would be nice to take them up. Plus that second seat area is great for
bringing extra gear along.
It is a tough choice between these 2 planes. I appreciate everyone's input.
