I have an attachment on my drill motor that handles that fairly well. It is a device to help make truly vertical holes, it has a platform that sits on flat surfaces. It can slide or be locked on to the two supporting rods. <sigh> I should just go take a picture of it. Mostly I leave most of the device off, except the piece behind the chuck that holds the rods. The top of the platform, which is about 8" from the chuck, at the end of the rods, has 'V' blocks made in. Oh, forget it, I'll take a picture. The V-blocks (cast in) hold tubular objects, the drill motor slides vertically down to the work piece, held in alignment by the rods, the drill is held at right angle to the work piece. Bought it about 35 years ago. Works like a charm for many things. I learned 45 years ago that it is hard to hold a drill truly normal (vertical) to a flat surface, while building the 747 in N. Long Beach. GeoB

Brother Canterbury: A measure I have found to be effective is to beef up the spring(s) on the offending rudder pedal. I installed two springs, vice the one called for in the plans. This enabled the use of a smaller rudder tab and might save you from having to knock those additional holes in your rudder. Worth what ye paid fer it... Beauford FF-076 I flew the aircraft today without the trim tab and it was as expected. Right leg was sore after one trip around the patch. I will be fabricating a new trim tab soon and give that a try. I would like to install some kind of reinforcement to the rudder to mount the tab to instead of trying to drill the small round tubing. It is hard to keep the drill bit from walking. I might check with a friend that has a machine shop and see if he can make some kind of jig or fixture to help with that. I appreciate all of the feedback.

Hi , I think --underline think-- that Kolb has a tool that is used to center the holes when drilling the ribs, you might give Travis a call. if you go to harbor freight... look for a center punch that is pressure actuated..... when you push on it it builds up tension and then goes "snap" an internal hammer gets released and hits the back of the point and makes a perfect starting divot for a drill. if you "snap" it a few times the dent will be large enough that the drill wont slip out, providing you have a good drill bit. or start with a very small drill then work up to the size you need. because you are working aluminum and not steel... try and find one that has a less stiff spring,,, you dont want to bend the tubing when it goes snap.... or hopefully you can get something to back up the tubing so there is no possibility of bending it. best to try it on some scraps to test the results before moving to the plane.... if you can find a sheet metal fabricating shop,,, stop by and see if they have a 1/8th inch drill bit that has a double grind on the tip,,, and that is probably not the best description... they have a very sharp point due to the extra grinding on the tip and have less tendency to move around when you start a hole, especially when they have a center punched hole to start in. some of these drill bits have been ground on both ends, and you get 2 cutting points in one bit. boyd young --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! Makes me want to have my airplane out there, but not willing to pay the price to fly it cross continent. I couldn't tell what condition the river was in. It is a bit high, but I think it is fishable. I am quite sure that we can get across both spots. I have a friend from my boyhood days coming to visit the 13th, and he is an ardent fisherman. At that date we might well still be able to catch some trout. The end of the month, it will be about as low as it was when we were there last. I talked to JB and he isn't going to be able to come for the fly-in. He has some grand kids that will be messing up his schedule. He won't make it before late August or Sept. I am using the Obrien brakes on my Kolbra. I have the Matco MC-4 master cylinders. Currently, the brakes are not working well. I am going to need to design some different brake pedals that will give more leverage. I have heard that they require a 4:1 mechanical advantage to work properly.
