Subject: | Xtra Control Problems |
I=92m having some steering and control problems with my Xtra. I haven=92t
flown it yet as I have been dealing with various issues. However, a
local IP who has quite a lot of time in tail draggers was kind enough to
take it for a test flight today. Dennis Kirby gave him a familiarization
ride in his MKIII before the flight. I have had problems with the
steering before but thought it was due to loose tail wheel springs which
have been adjusted. The last time I did a high speed taxi test I had a
difficult time keeping it going straight and ran off the side of the
runway. However, during todays attempt the IP had the same issues, " I
went around the pattern a couple times with Dennis early this morning
and felt comfortable enough to take yours out to try a couple touch and
goes, but I couldn't keep yours on the runway during the takeoff roll.
Three times off to the left and into the dirt, once it even started
rolling uncontrollably left after lift-off. I didn't hit anything and
the plane is undamaged but it wasn't for lack of trying. There are
serious directional-control issues with the bird.=94
There is a trim tab on the rudder that is almost at 90 degrees and
another on the elevator that is about the same. There is also a trim tab
on the right aileron.
It seems that the wheels must be mis-alined which would explain the
tracking issue. However, I=92m at a loss as the cause of the roll
problems, perhaps a wing-incidence problem.
I=92m getting really tired of it sitting in the hanger and not in the
air!
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Brad Nation

Kolbers:
Bruce asked me to post this for him. He has lost the ability to send emails to
the Kolb List.
The engine is a 912uls. The aircraft is practically new, despite being built in
2003. Bruce flew with me out to Monument Valley and the Rock House in 2009.
That says a lot for any Kolb.

Trim tabs at 90 deg.... I don't understand,, tab deflected that far should
stall and not work as needed.. or intended.. what is your toe in / out
measurements? Duo you know how to get accurate measurements?
