Subject: | 582 Engine Vibration on Mark III - Problem Found |
Many thanks to all of you who responded with tips on troubleshooting. '
much appreciated. The source of the vibration appears to be a huge crack in
the one of the large triangular shaped prop hub plates on the 3 blade Warp
Drive prop (the plates that support each individual propeller blade front
and back). It wasn't immediately noticeable because of it being the plate
on the gearbox side. The crack propagated from one edge of the plate,
through the center and within a half inch of the other side. So one prop
blade was probably within moments of departing the aircraft. I have
never heard of this happening on a Warp Drive prop. The prop has 519 hours
on it. It was torqued at installation to the recommended 175 in lbs, and
each blade to the recommended 120 in lbs. To my knowledge, the prop has
never struck anything. None of the blades have ever been repaired. Warp
Drive is closed today, but intend to follow-up with them tomorrow. Again,
thanks to all who responded to my request for any troubleshooting tips. It
is great to have this forum to share ideas.

Hoping some of you fellow Kolbers have some troubleshooting ideas. One a
recent flight, the 582 engine on our Mark III suddenly went from being the
usual silky smooth to instant roughness/vibration - almost as if something
suddenly broke. We managed to get it back to the home airport about 13
miles away. The whole airframe was shaking, but the engine seemed to be
developing full power. Switching from one ignition source to the other had
no effect. The engine monitor indicated CHT and EGT to be nearly the same
on both cylinders and within the normal range. I've since changed spark
plugs, removed both carbs for disassembly, cleaning and inspection. I
completely drained the fuel system and put fresh premium alcohol free fuel
in. All has had no effect on the vibration. Engine mounts appear to be OK
- not broken. The engine develops full power, but still shakes badly.
Prop is visually OK. Would appreciate any tips on what to check next. The
next step planned is a compression check. Thanks.

Gary:
A very similar (if not identical thing) happened to the fellow (Randy) who flew
with Arty Trost from Oregon to SnF and back in 2009. As I recall, he was enroute
and it got serious somewhere in the SW and he was in the process of swapping
the engine (R582?) when he found the cracked plate as he removed the prop.
Not sure if it was a Warp or not.
(The part of how and where he got the replacement engine from was a whole separate
story.)
