The original Firestar never had a 7 rib wing. That came along with the KXP and
the Firestar II, probably around 1990 according to the Kolb website

There is something fascinating about science. One gets such wholesale returns of
conjecture out of such a trifling investment of fact.

As I recall, Kolb had a test pilot go up and intentionally break the wing on a
Firestar by overspeeding it and doing a sharp pull out. They recovered the wreckage
with a ballistic chute, then strengthened the parts that broke.
I may be hallucinating again, but this is what I recall. I'd have to drag out my
old copies of Glider Rider from the attic to confirm.

That did happen on the Ultra Star.... some young and crazy guy(Dennis
Souder) flew the US to the point of structural failure...The drag strut
came out of column and required some beefing up..as is seen on all Kolb
wings today.. Herb

... and if my memory serves me well, he told me he threw out a hand-held
'chute.

Don't believe Dennis Souder intentionally flew/tested/stressed the US to
destruction, but he did accomplish it. The goal was to prove the aircraft
would tolerate the advertised G loading of, I think, 4+/4-. Dennis exceeded
advertised g loading, I'm guessing 5+/5-. Decided to see what it would do,
when a drag strut failed.
Dennis was flying with a hand deployed parachute, not a ballistic parachute.
I hadn't covered the wings of my Ultrastar yet. Kolb Company sent me the
drag strut braces, 31 years ago this March.
When I built my Firestar, I installed a G Meter, later installed in my
MKIII. Was very difficult to pull 5 G's with the Firestar. Most aerobatic
maneuvers could be performed pulling 2.5 to 3 G's. My MKIII has never
performed an aerobatic maneuver, but has pulled a lot of G's, positive and
negative, flying in severe turbulence.
