If you look forward to checking your List email everyday (and a lot of you have
written to say that you do!), then you're probably getting at least $20 or $30
worth of Entertainment from the Lists each year. You'd pay twice that for a
subscription to some magazine or even a dinner out. Isn't the List worth at least
that much to you? Wouldn't it be great if you could pay that amount and get
a well-managed media source free of advertising, SPAM, and viruses? Come to
think of it, you do... :-)
Won't you please take a minute to make your Contribution today and support these

At one point I had a video of of Dennis Souder doing aerobatics in a Kolb.
Very impressive.
Dennis told me later on the Homer Kolb sat him down and said Dennis you
don't need to be braking any more of our factory planes we have a new
customer that is intent on pushing the limits of our planes. Seems like he
said it was John Hauck.

Subject: | Rotax 447 Intake Silencer Mounting Bracket |
I recently bought and installed the Rotax intake silencer on my 447 single
carb Firefly. There are no factory directions as to how to attach the
rather bulky, yet lightweight silencer, so I developed one myself.
The fabrication drawing is posted on Motronics file share.

Subject: | Re: 5 rib wing on a Firestar |
Homer Kolb often told me I was his best "test bed".
The factory did a lot of testing, but I don't believe they were able to
put the hours and loads on US and FS that I was able to do. I loved
flying both these aircraft and flew nearly every day. Both aircraft
flew long cross country flights, heavily loaded, through a lot of
adverse weather, made thousands of landings on all types of fields,
mostly rough unpaved strips, and a lot of aerobatics.
I broke both my airplanes while flying. Both were scrapped.
I learned stress was cumulative. Every time the aircraft is stressed, a
little bit is subtracted from 1.0. Eventually, you will ask it to do a
job and it will respond with a failure.
I was lucky, was trained to use parachutes in the Army, was a
paratrooper 9 years until I went to Army flight school to fly rotary
wing aircraft. I knew parachutes worked, I trained for a catastrophic
failure, should it happen. I used the same hand deployed parachute
twice, I practiced deployment every time it was repacked. My Brother
Jim repacked my parachute one week before I used it the first time. He
sat me on an air conditioner unit and I actually threw the parachute
down and to the left, same as I would, should I need to.
I paid $500.00 for a Jim Handbury Hand Deployed Parachute. Best $500.00
I ever spent. Saved my life twice at 250.00 a pop.
Getting a little long winded here. Search the Kolb List Archives. I
think there is info on the cause and save of both aircraft, and me.

Dennis was flying with a hand deployed parachute, not a ballistic
parachute.
I hadn't covered the wings of my Ultrastar yet. Kolb Company sent me
the
drag strut braces, 31 years ago this March.
When I built my Firestar, I installed a G Meter, later installed in my
MKIII. Was very difficult to pull 5 G's with the Firestar. Most
aerobatic
maneuvers could be performed pulling 2.5 to 3 G's. My MKIII has never
performed an aerobatic maneuver, but has pulled a lot of G's, positive
and
negative, flying in severe turbulence.

As I recall, Kolb had a test pilot go up and intentionally break the
wing on
a Firestar by overspeeding it and doing a sharp pull out. They recovered
the
wreckage with a ballistic chute, then strengthened the parts that broke.
I may be hallucinating again, but this is what I recall. I'd have to
drag
out my old copies of Glider Rider from the attic to confirm.
