Dear Listers,
The percentage of members making a Contribution to support the Lists this year
is currently behind last year by at this time by roughly 20%. Please take this
opportunity to show your support for the Matronics Lists and Forums!
Please remember that it is *solely* your direct Contributions that keep these Lists
and Forums up and running and most importantly - AD FREE! If the members
don't want to support the Lists directly, then I might have to add advertisements
to offset the costs of running the Lists. But I don't want to have to do
that. I really like the non-commercial atmosphere here and I think that a lot
of the members appreciate that too.
Please take a moment to make a Contribution today in support of the continued ad-free
operation of all these Lists:

Charlie,
Yes, one can adjust the shade in flight.
The heater core was used in a 1994 Ford Ranger pickup.
Core is 1.5 in thick, 7 in tall, & 5.5 in wide.
5/8 in diameter tubes.
Partsamerica.com is gone. Carparts.com has them for less than $30.

Richard,
I was dumped with out warning. If they had let me know, I could have down
loaded the site in to a new computer directory and then burnt a optical disk
of the whole thing. This would have made moving it very simple. As it is
I am putting it back up a file at a time from my disorganized computer
development directory. Then I have to check to see all the referenced jumps
for sites and photos are also uploaded. It takes time. If the weather is
good I like to stay out side.

If you mean the fabric sling seats, as in my Firestar, call Travis at the factory.
Also, somebody (Richard Pike?) made some from plastic boat seats he got
at WalMart (I think).

Doing the annual condition inspection on the FSII today and was not real happy
with the cylinder walls. They have no stuck metal, they are not scuffed down to
the depth of the hone marks, but still - I am not satisfied that they look like
they ought to.
Trying to get the camera to look inside and produce decent pictures was about impossible,
but the front and rear transfer ports in both cylinders have very
similar looking marks above them. Also, these marks are only found above the various
transfer ports.
Have a Rotax school certified buddy coming over tomorrow to take a look, meantime
I thought I would throw them up for you guys to have a peek and offer some
comments.
The pistons look great, rings are free, minimal carbon on the piston top and head
underside. Plugs look slightly cool, but otherwise normal.
The owner had an overheat problem back in June, engine power sagged off, he landed
and let it sit for a while, started back up and flew home with no problems.
Engine has acquired about 10 hours since then with no problems noted. Hmmm....
Am I being too cautious? Or is it time to ship these jugs & pistons off to the
shop? Inquiring minds want to know....

Richard, Any indication of piston slap when the engine is cold? I don't see
anything that looks terrible, but that overheat makes my forehead wrinkle a
bit. If you pull the cylinders your buddy should know the proper place to
mic the piston to check for wear on the skirts. My best guess is that
overheat was on the way to a seizure and a very tiny bit of metal was
transferred and then scrubbed off when the engine was restarted after
cooling. Mic'ing the pistons should tell you that.
One of the best webinars that the EAA ever did was on reading Rotax piston
and cylinder marks. You might want to look it up on Oshkosh 365 and review
it.

The absolute cheapest headset ever. A good set of industrial ear chocks,
about $30 (I still use the set that Boeing gave me 15 years ago) and any
(ANY) in the ear style MP3 player headphones (mine were $10 at Wally's). I
can still hear the engine and the radio and any music I want to play on the
MP3. The important thing is to get the in-the-ear style with three sets of
squishy cushions (S,M,L and they come with the medium size installed).
Adjust the cushions until you get a good comfortable fit. I can wear mine
for hours and I don't even notice them.
I worked big machine shops most of my working life. The safety guys told me
to wear ear plugs to protect my hearing and I did. My friends have hearing
aids now, but I don't need them until the wife comes up with a project for
me to do. :-}

Richard:
That looks like a lot of scuffing in the photo.
I wouldn't fly it until it was rebuilt. My butt is worth more than an
overhaul.
The engine should have been looked at after the seizure, mild or not, before
it was flown. I think he is lucky it didn't seize on him during the last 10
hours of flight.
My own personal opinion.
