If it is a registered aircraft the type of coating would have to be in
the log book.

Not sure of the context of your statement. Do you mean a plane with an
FAA Type Certificate? If so, then 'approved' coatings must be used. If
an amateur-built experimental registered in the USA, then I know of no
requirement to document the coating used.

I have been looking for an app for my Android phone that will allow my wife to
follow my flights or back woods trail rides on her computer. Vince said there
was a post on the list about that, but I cannot seem to come up with the right
search query to find it.
Is anybody using one of these that you would recommend?
Thanks and Happy New Year!

Well the Gov can track you on your phone, not sure how or for that matter
if I would like the general public to do so. :-) I of course use a "Spot"
http://www.findmespot.com/en/index.php?cid=111
to enable my wife to be able to find my body, if worse comes to worse. It
sends a link to any computer that you specify. Worth the money to me.
However this may be what you are looking for-

I use FollowMee on my Windows phone. I suspect it is available to Apple and
Android users too.
Once set up, you create an account and can put a password on it. Then only
those that have your password can track you. It is all automatic, but you
can stop the tracking function anytime. I got this for my wife to use when I
go flying. One thing we have noticed is it is not always "real time". That
is to say that sometimes the locations on the web site are a little behind.
You generally get what you pay for, and this is a free app with an option to
upgrade for more features. It does what I need and I don't anticipate
upgrading.
Not as useful as a SPOT, but much cheaper, like me.

Hello Kolb Folks,
Here are two picture of a tail light on a Kolb rudder. This is an untested
design and I cannot recommend this application at this time. I talked to a
couple of builder who had unsatisfactory experience with their designs, so
using that advise I tried to do something different, that hopefully will not
adversely affect the performance of the rudder. Please share your thoughts!
Some may wonder why I even want a tail light. Alaska has a lot of twilight
in the summer. Many time I have spotted aircraft ahead of us, in the late
evening, that had all kind of other safe lighting, but the first thing that
shows up in the distance is just the little tail light.
Thanks for your thoughts,

Kolbs are very difficult to see when approaching from the rear, as well as
most aircraft, but Kolbs can disappear until just before impact. My age and
eye sight may have something to do with that now, but 20 years ago it
didn't.

My son thinks Google has an app so parents can track their kids. I use a
ham radio tracker, but you have to get a ham license. Once you buy the
hardware it is free. It works similar to the spot tracker but is ground
based not satellite.
Try entering phone tracker....lost phone finder.... call your phone
provider...
Good luck

Is that just a white light, or a strobe? Something that flashes will be
much more likely to catch the eye than a steady light. I would suspect
that faster, heavier planes would be more likely to descend into
something like a Kolb, than to climb into one. (If they are climbing,
they likely saw you take off in front of them & will be watching for
you, but in a descent to landing, they will be focused on the runway.)
Will the light be visible from above/behind?

After lunch today I installed Glympse. It is pretty simple to use; you send an
email to whoever you want to see your track, and then tell your phone how long
you want it to broadcast, max time is 4 hours & 15 minutes, and nobody sees
it but the person/people you invite. It updates several times a minute, or you
can set it for low battery usage and broadcast less often. I went for max coverage
to see how the battery would do.
All the motorcycles needed running, and it was about 57 degrees today, so I put
the phone in my pocket and went riding. The wife could watch my track real time
on her PC. Also, the tracks persisted on her PC even after I got done and exited
the program.
I sent myself a track request about 4PM and let it run the full 4 hours just to
hammer the batttery, for a total of about 6 + hours use today, battery in the
phone is down about 50%, so I think I'll spend $20 and get an external battery
pack to carry with me, something like this:

The Glympse website is http://www.glympse.com/what-is-glympse
I will be checking this out over the winter, worth what ya paid for it, thanks
for the comments, and Happy New Year.
