When I painted mine in 04 I had looked at several latex paints and how they
held up after long periods of time exposed to the weather. I ended up usin
g Flex Bon which is made in Florida and designed to hold up under sun and h
eat year around. I used Depont automotive clear coat and applied two coats
and have been very happy how well it has held up all these years. I lost th
e roof off my hanger 4 years ago and even exposed that long it still looks
good.

I just finished a new video on applying=0A
latex paint with a roller. After the sanding=0A
and polishing process the results are nearly=0A
as good as spraying. Both methods=2C spraying=0A
and rolling have their advantages.=0A

Spraying gives the best finish=2C it=92s=0A
faster for big areas=2C and requires less=0A
sanding to smooth the orange peel. But=2C you=0A
need spray equipment and a paint booth the=0A
contain the over spray=2C and you need to mask=0A
parts that you don=92t want painted.=0A

Rolling is faster for smaller areas and=0A
requires no masking other than along edges=2C it
=0A
needs no paint booth or equipment=2C there=92s no

over spray. But=2C it requires more sanding to=0A
remove the orange peel and while the result is=0A

always lightly sand between coats with about 120 grit sandpaper on walls
with a drywall pole sander and on trim with sponge pads and only sand
very lightly just to remove any thing from roller cover fuzz to
something in the paint. Can be re coated in 2 to 6 hrs depending on
temp and humidity. We always strain the paint if any paint has been put
back in the can. We even had to strain new cans of latex if when opened
if they had a skin on the lid . DTM stands for Direct to Metal. On
round metal duct work after cleaning we just put 2 coats of DTM no
primer necessary no sanding between coats, ( no one could run their
hands on it .) On new and old painted surfaces it needs to be clean
and if going over a high gloss a bonding primer should be used
first or sanding to dull the surface. DTM will bond to almost any
clean surface. We
applied most of ours with rollers or brush. We used the clear high
gloss base over a faux finish on the exterior of a restaurant (made
smooth sandstone match granite on the front of an old bank that was
converted into a high end restaurant), That was at least 10 years ago
an it has held up good to the weather except right where the sandstone
meets the sidewalk, snow shovels and power sidewalk sweeper damage.
I went and checked just before writing this.
This material will start to set faster than other latex paint so
you can't roll back into it as long as other paints . I would still thin
it. Sherwin Williams makes another product they call All Surface
Enamel. We were told that if we needed just a quart of DTM we could
buy this as it was just DTM in quarts. DTM only comes in gallons. I
don't know if they have an ultra deep base in this line to use as the
clear. If you want experiment with this product you could buy a quart
to try. There would definitely be a learning curve to use this
product. Using the Floetrol you would still need to thin a little.
Check the S&W site and you can get the data sheets on these products.

is actually the product I've been using on the last few projects and it's
great.
