Subject: | 503 oil pump cable end wearing |
This 503 came from the factory without oil injection. At 80 hours I installed
an injection system. The engine now has 136 hours so only 56 hours on this cable.
You can see it is worn about 1/4 of the way through the barrel swedge on
both ends where it contacts the oil pump lever. The pump lever is not worn at
all. I noticed the swedge is brass. Too soft??? I have lubed it with LPS
about every 10 hours.
The engine is on a Kitfox so I had California Power Sports make a cable with the
503 oiler swedge on the pump end and a barrel swedge to fit the Kitfox throttle
reverser bellcrank on the other end. I think I gave them measurements either
too short for the inner cable or too long for the outer cable.
I had to put both lock nuts on the adjuster below the bracket as shown to make
the line on the lever line up at 3000 rpm. This caused the cable to not pull
straight up on the lever at full throttle as shown in the photos. Could that
be my problem
I really like the convenience of the injection and it is supposed to be better
for the engine but this is no good. Anyone else have this problem or have any
ideas. I called CPS and they do not custom make cables anymore.
I iknow this is not a Kolb but I have had better luck asking two stroke questions
here. On the Kitfox forums if you don't have a 912 you might as well not show
up at the dance on Saturday night.

Have you tried Matronic's ROTAX Engine List?
Guessing engine vibration is causing your cable stop to wear. Oiling the
fitting may be attracting dirt and grit which is accelerating wear.

Brad,
Hmmm..... a very rough guess is maybe 500 feet.
I was trying to be smooth and not scare my wife so I put in throttle real easy
and then let it run a little beyond normal Lift off speed.
Solo it seems to get up in less than 300 feet with out trying too hard.
Dual there was 370 pounds of people and 15 Gallons of gas.
I am certainly not an expert and I am hardly qualified to talk about the capabilities
of this aircraft. I really am learning (very slowly) what this airplane
can do.
Hope this is useful.

Subject: | Repairing a kinked boom tube |
I have a friend that bought a Firestar that has a kinked boom tube, right under
the prop. It had a collar over it, and it was being flown like that, but he wants
a better fix. A firestar II boom is available. Will a firestar II boom fit
a firestar? Can a used boom tube be fit to another airplane. Is there another
fix?
Thanks

Going to take a new 5" tube and H Brace. There was enough variation in
fuselages, even though welded up in the same jig, to prevent a tube fit
to one fuselage being used on a different fuselage.
Don't recommend flying with a kinked boom tube.

You will need to compare the tubes & cages. Is the wall thickness the same, and
is the OD of the tube the same? Is the distance from the front collar to the
H brace & aft bolt hole the same?
When Ed folded up FSII N582EF (before & after pictures here - http://oh2fly.net/oldpoops/kolb.htm - ) we found a basket case FSII in Florida and went and got it. As it turned out, the boom fit perfectly and assembling the two basket cases into one good airplane was pretty simple, and the boom tube into the cage almost a no-brainer, line the pieces up, a big rubber hammer and - ka-ching.
As John said, there may be variation between a FS and a FSII. In our situation,
we were using 2 FSII's, and everything fit very well. Your results may vary -
measure carefully.
