Subject: Steam gauge brass insert fix
    From: "Richard Pike" <thegreybaron@charter.net>
For those of you still using steam gauges, especially the ones like in the picture below, you might save yourself a lot of grief if - before you install them - you mix up a little JB Quick and carefully dab it around the outside of the 4 brass inserts that hold the gauge together, that are threaded for the retaining screws. You want to bond the insert tightly to the gauge w/o getting any epoxy on the threads. Obviously you do this on the back side. Because after 18 years, that brass insert might corrode and cleave itself tightly to the screw, and then when you try and remove the screw, instead of the screw coming out, the insert spins in the gauge. Which results in fighting with it for over an hour while in a position way too awkward for an old man. Guess how I know this? -------- Richard Pike Kolb MKIII N420P (420ldPoops) Kingsport, TN 3TN0 There are two kinds of people: those who say to God, 'Thy will be done,' and those to whom God says, 'All right, then, have it your way.' Good advice Richard. Also, a drop of oil on the threads, or better yet a tiny amount of anti-seize compound will help stop galvanic action between the dissimilar metals of the screw and nut. -----Original Message----- From: owner-kolb-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-kolb-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of Richard Pike Sent: Saturday, April 18, 2015 1:11 PM Subject: Kolb-List: Steam gauge brass insert fix --> <thegreybaron@charter.net> For those of you still using steam gauges, especially the ones like in the picture below, you might save yourself a lot of grief if - before you install them - you mix up a little JB Quick and carefully dab it around the outside of the 4 brass inserts that hold the gauge together, that are threaded for the retaining screws.
