Hi, I only have experience in my old Challenger. Changing the angle of the flaperon altered the trim considerably. Lowering the flaps for landing made the plane nose heavy. Not uncontrollably so, just heavy on the stick. I considered this a plus as if my attention wandered on the approach the plane tended to go faster instead of slowing up and stalling. I compromised on take off by only applying a little flap.. Not really convinced it made much difference. When building the Challenger we contrived a Bowden cable control for the flaps with a small winding handle which enable the application of tiny increments and an angle indicator in the cockpit. For what iys worth. Pat -----Original Message----- From: Dee LeBlanc Sent: Saturday, July 18, 2015 8:39 AM Subject: Kolb-List: Flaparons vs flaps & ailerons I have only experience with flaps. In my case they are all con and no pro. I've got flaparons on my M3X. First off you loose a lot of square footage on your wing as the flaps are missing and the ailerons don't extend all the way across the aft portion of the wing. Major problem I have is the flaparons are much longer than the standard ailerons. In flight it takes excessive force to move them, to the point that I had to remove my dual controls as singles stick control gives more leverage. I never use my flaparons as I've noticed only a 2 knt improvement on stall speed and as hard as it is to get to the handle, it's not worth it. Kolb makes a larger 15 gal fuel tank for the M3X but I couldn't use it as the flaparons control tubes are in the way. I've actually talked with Kolb about coming to the factory and having my aircraft converted to normal flaps. I've only flown the 3C and 3X with flaps. With one notch of flaps both aircraft would take off without moving the stick in 200 to 250 feet even in no wind. I flew the Challenger 2 for a couple of hours when I had one in the shop. Big trim changes as Pat Ladd said. Good luck, Rick Girard do not archive On Sat, Jul 18, 2015 at 9:10 AM, kinne russ <russk50@gmail.com> wrote: > > Dee > FWIW I=99ve had no problems with flaperons on my Mk3Xtra. Given your past history and tendencies, one would have thought that you would have donated them to a needy and deserving super saver. :-) Larry On Sat, Jul 18, 2015 at 9:15 AM, Herb <Herbgh@nctc.com> wrote: > > > Fellow Kolbers... > > I have a new Falcon 2.25 fuel gauge, and new 24 inch sender.... That is my natural tendency...but ....I am saving to buy and install one of those "fancy" Japanese, 4 stroke , 2 cylinder engines... :-) On my future Firestar that is... Hmmmm? Maybe I had better keep the altimeter? I hear that the folks in Japan make fine pieces of machinery!! A bud of mine bought one of the early HKS engines and there were some problems....The company sent him a new ,improved version and never asked for the old one ....!! Something they must have learned from Rotax? I do have a gap seal that is not pictured. My plane does not have a rudder trim tab. It didnt come with a manual or full set of planes either. A trim tab sure woud be nice! I still havent taken it up yet, tonight i am going to check the camber and try to give it a go. I will probably skip all the high speed taxi's and and attempt a simple 3 point landing :? -------- 98' Kolb FireFly Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=444928#444928
