    Subject: Avare
    From: "Richard Pike" <thegreybaron@charter.net>
The ancient Magellan in my MKIII seems to have croaked, and rather than buy a new one, tried a free app for my ElCheapo smart phone. It works good enough that I think some of you might be interested. It is called Avare, it is free, and it shows you a sectional chart on your smart phone screen, with a little red airplane where your phone is. It tracks along with you, shows you your ground screen, and has a few options, like the nearest airports within 20 miles, and heading to fly and distance to go. Also seems to have a navigate function, but I need to make a mounting bracket before I try that. Haven't used it enough to figure out all it will do, but so far it seems very worthwhile. One thing: it sucks the battery down like crazy. I do have a little recharge stick that you plug into your phone to triple the battery life, so when I rig up a bracket to mount the phone on my joystick, I will include a little holder for the aux battery pack. Will add some pictures once I get a mounting bracket made. A used Nexus 7 can be had for under 100 bucks...Herb On 11/12/2015 07:48 PM, Richard Pike wrote: > > The ancient Magellan in my MKIII seems to have croaked, and rather than buy a new one, tried a free app for my ElCheapo smart phone. I have been using foreflight on my IPhone6. I isn't free but it is a finely tuned product at a reasonable cost. It has way more than I use (up to date charts, airport diagrams, local fuel prices, current winds, weather, flight planning, etc) They really want you to use a IPad but it works well on the phone. I think is also works on a android phone. Anyway much less expensive than you usual aircraft GPS. I use a car charger in the plane to keep the power up. It even works on the big airplanes to keep track of your progress. I will be interested to see what Richard comes up with for a mount. Anyway to keep it Kolb my MKIIIC is hibernating for the winter in Michigan while I'm toughing it out in Florida. And now there's a helper app that lets you get adsb traffic and weather using a $20 sdr dongle. Haven't flown with it yet to see the adsb tower, but it gets mode s traffic just fine on the ground.
