I leave my tablet charger plugged into a cigarette lighter socket I

I agree, ForeFlight is an amazing app. I use it on a mini iPad and
simply put it on my lap. Also have the app (no extra cost) on my smart
phone. $75 per year for basic plan (that=99s definitely all I
need).

Richard P/Gang:
Do you have a 12 vdc charger for your phone?
Hook it into your aircraft electrical system.

The ancient Magellan in my MKIII seems to have croaked, and rather than buy
a new one, tried a free app for my ElCheapo smart phone. It works good
enough that I think some of you might be interested.
It is called Avare, it is free, and it shows you a sectional chart on your
smart phone screen, with a little red airplane where your phone is. It
tracks along with you, shows you your ground screen, and has a few options,
like the nearest airports within 20 miles, and heading to fly and distance
to go. Also seems to have a navigate function, but I need to make a mounting
bracket before I try that.
Haven't used it enough to figure out all it will do, but so far it seems
very worthwhile.
One thing: it sucks the battery down like crazy. I do have a little recharge
stick that you plug into your phone to triple the battery life, so when I
rig up a bracket to mount the phone on my joystick, I will include a little
holder for the aux battery pack. Will add some pictures once I get a mounting
bracket made.

I fly in class Bravo airspace so I have been using Avare on my 10.1" Samsung Tablet
that is powered by an auxiliary 12V. power outlet. The accuracy seems pretty
good and the whole system gives me good situational awareness at a glance.
We have so many MOA's and a few restricted airspaces around Phoenix, so this
app helps me thread the little corridors from where I am, to where I want to go.
:D
You can buy the cheaper tablets with GPS on Amazon for around $70.00-$90.00. The
sectionals do take a considerable amount of memory so if you start flying where
multiple sectional charts are needed make sure you have at least 16 GB of
memory. I have 32 GB of memory and lots of Sectionals loaded.

I have been using Avare on my Samsung Galaxy S 8.4. Works great, and free
updates! Two features I like are the extended runway vectors after you tell
Avare which airport you target, and the airport layout that comes on when
you get close.
I managed to convince the Avare app to store map databases on the tablet's
SD card - 64GB - no worries!
I bought a 12V charge adapter, took the 12V side apart and hardwired it to
a spare fuse. Whenever I mount my tablet on the panel, I plug in the 5V end
of the charge cable. That way, I can have the tablet at max brightness (and
it is fully charged when I'm done flying).
