Richard, I believe the reddish colored needle valves are the latest formula
to deal with ethanol gas. I got them for rebuilding a pair of 64's a couple
of years ago and again when I needed just a needle valve last year. Sounds
more like the steel portion is oversize. Since it's three lobed you can't
just measure them with a micrometer. A ring gauge might work if you know
someone with these very specialized gauges.
