Subject: | ND flying videos |
Hi everyone,
Raining here today so had a chance to get some videos from last year posted.
No music, just engine and wind noise.
http://www.harnerfarm.net/serenity/videos.html
New ones are at the bottom of the list.
Serenity Landing is a little long and maybe a little boring. It was the end
of a nice evening flight. You get to see a little of the countryside around
the Mandan, ND airport as well as the grass strip.
Dawn Patrol was a friend wanting to get some pictures from his deck. It was
a nice warm morning but we forgot his deck faces East! My video came out
better than his pictures.
Hello! was from my last flight of the year and it was my birthday. I had
promised a friend that I would fly up and around their house so their little
boy could see it. Problem was, even though it was nice on the ground,
anything above about 600' AGL was so rough it was out of my comfort zone. I
forced myself to fly in the rough air as I figured I needed the practice. I
got as high as I dared and crossed the river where there was a wide sand
bar. First time over water! Made it safe and sound but I was not sure about
the fuel situation so only made one pass. I sure don't want to run out on
final because I was screwing around too long. As it turns out I had a gallon
and a half when I got back.
This year I plan on experimenting with different camera mounts/locations to
try and minimize the "jello" effect.
Enjoy, or ignore, your choice!
Stuart

I have checked all over my Firestar and the only place that will give me
the least amount of jello and other crap is on the end of the nose pod, and
secured as solid as I can get it. I have a screw in pitot tube holder
(plastic from AC spruce) I took a piece of alum flat stock, bent half of it
180 degrees and mounted my cradle on it. It just clears the pod. I tried
one of the stick on holders and it was not as good as the alum for some
reason.
The other spot that isn't all that bad is the wing. Of course if you fold
it each time , that isn't going to work.
You will also find that there is some rpm ranges that will cause jello. For
me and the HKS with a Max cruise of 5800 RPM, I find that either 5400 or
faster is as smooth as it gets for me. So if you are getting jello, do a
flight and mark your RPM's and try different speeds and see which works the
best.
I think some of the reason the quality is less than I would expect is where
the video is uploaded to. Vimeo has a free membership that will give you
5000? MB a week free. The quality is really good, and they don't hassle you
if you want to put some music on your video. You tube is impossible for me
to deal with. When I am uploading it I make the quality as high as I can
get it.
Thanks for doing the videos, I like to see other parts of the country, and
appreciate the effort that it takes to do a video. I wish others would do
more.

$310. No shipping provided. But Fresno is midway between San Francisco and
LA, on hwy 99.

Larry,
Yes, VIRB Elite and I think I am using the same settings as you. I had
it mounted up high next to the enricher lever so that I could see the
horizon and instruments as well as my hands on the controls. I used the
videos to review each flight for training purposes. For my last flight
last fall I dropped it down on the same upright trying to get less
vibration. It was a last minute idea before I took off. Waving my arms
around really messed that up!
The nose cone on Serenity is mounted with screws on the bottom instead
of rivets. That might be a place to make a mounting bracket that can be
easily removed. Problem is I don=99t have a remote control and I
sometimes forget to turn the camera on. Where it is I can reach it when
I remember. I also worry about the camera falling out of the cradle and
I haven=99t figured out a good way to secure it yet.
The VIRB seems to do a pretty good job but it always screws up the sync
between the data tracking and the video on the first file. The tracking
will always be about a minute ahead of the video so it looks like I am
flying and turning while I am still on the ground. After the camera
starts a new file at 23+ minutes, the sync is fine. Go figure!
I have my own domain name and access to a web server as a benefit of my
job. File size is no limit for me, but can be a pain for the viewing
public. I need to look into other file types but MP4 gives good
compression from the VIRB defaults and most people can view them. .AVI
and .MOV work but are larger in size. What file type do you upload to
VIMEO?

I set my camera to record when movement is detected. It works quite well. I
just turn it on and when I am moving whether taxiing or flying it is on and
recording. When you stop it shuts off, and starts a new file when you begin
moving again. The unit also has Wifi so you could theoretically control it
with a smart phone. I prefer the record while moving setting.

I upload to MP4 at the max quality- 1980 to 1080 @ 30 frames. Something,
probably the service that you upload to is cutting the clarity of the video
down to the point that it compares to about 280 kb rather than HD. As far
as the security of the camera in the cradle goes. I used a safety wire but
cut it off since I don't think you could knock it off without a wreck
causing it. If you look at the picture of the wing mount you can see the
safety wire. It isn't connected in that one but I used a fishing snap
swivel to secure it to the mount.
I do make my videos differently in that I rough out the video with the
program that comes with the Virb. I then save it to a file and upload it to
a Cyberlink Power Director program so that I can add music and a narrative.
I don't see how that could improve anything, it would be more likely to
screw the thing up than help it.
Keep it up,
Larry
