I flew in and out of Moline International (MLI) a class "C" with no
transponder and a handheld radio. My radio only transmitted about 5 miles
until I put a half wave antenna on it to reach the tower from 20 miles out.
If they weren't busy, they let me fly in because I didn't show up on their
radar with a cloth plane, so I had to avoid jet traffic by radio because no
one could see me on their screen. But here is the future requirements.
If you fly in this airspace, you must be equipped with ADS-B
AirspaceAltitude
A All
B From the ground up within the Mode C ring
C From the ground up
E Above 10,000 ft MSL but not below 2,500 feet AGL
Don't buy ADS-B if you fly E below 10,000 feet or don't mix with the
airliners or corporate jets.
