Subject: | Open cockpit for Mark III |
I'm thinking of removing the top 1/2 of the cockpit on my Mk 3, just retain
the opaque portion of the cockpit. Should reduce profile, provide cleaner air
for the prop and an open air feel to the craft.
Has anyone gone this direction with the Mk 3?

I retrofitted my two 5 gallon fuel tanks installed on my MK 3 with two 10
gallon fuel tanks purchases from Air-Tech Inc.
Increased fuel capacity from 10 to 20 gallons negligible affect on c.g. double
the range.

Air-Tech sells a 10 gallon tank, one can replace the 5 gallon tanks with the
larger tanks. I'm very happy with the retrofit I did on my Mk 3

I carry a 5 foot length of very light weight convoluted hose, think shop
vacuum hose or swimming pool filter hose, to extend the fuel fill port away from
the wing when refueling at airport pumps.
Insert one end into the fuel tank and the pump nozzle the other, fill tank,
repeat for tank 2, stow hose behind seat for next refuel.
Very light and space efficient.

My S-14 arrived today...with the HKS-700E engine
Looking at the engine schematic...the 5 wire voltage reg does not have
a wire that goes to the CDI boxes..! 3 wires are white and see the three
Phase ac voltage... the Cdi boxes have two wires coming from the
accessory case and are likely magnetic pickups... 180 degs apart for the
two cylinders or could be two pickups for each cyl.. one full adv and
one starting and low rpm? ... If single coil they must be set to max
advance and the CDI box adds the delay for starting and low rpm
operation...? To me...this means that a lot of motorcycle cdi's should
work...? Most scooters work similarly... 10 dollar cdi box beats
whatever HKS wants... ..whether I would use a Chinese one??? Not
likely...:-) I have had two bail on my scooter.. Betting Yamaha has a
reasonable replacement?

I fabricated an aluminum tank that holds a little over 18 gal. Had a vendor that
I worked with at the time do the TIG welding. Probably heaver than plastic
though. See attached pics.
