Subject: | Regulator/Rectifier |
My new regulator came today for the HKS.
You may remember the difficulties that I have had with RPM's showing on my
EIS and my low battery alarm on my last video. The RPM stuff happened late
last fall, when I wasn't flying all that much due to the weather. I just
assumed that it was quirky by nature and bought a Tiny tach so that I would
have some idea of what I was doing. I kept a battery tender on the battery
all last year through the cold part and never flew all that long of a time
when I did fly. So since my alarm was set at 10 Volts, I never saw any
indication other than my RPM's that I had a problem, since I wasn't flying
long enough duration to run the battery down to the alarm setting.
I had talked a bit with Grand Rapids Tech about the RPM issue, and was told
that the r/rect. on the HKS did not charge if the battery was up to full
charge. Having that in mind I took the battery tender off this spring when
the cold weather quit, hoping that the RPM;s would show up again if the
battery wasn't topped off. Nope!
So the long flights looking for my errant bird finally ran the battery down
to alarm stage. Now I will confess, I do not see myself as a mechanic. In
fact if I happen to get grease on my hands, I consider the whole day to be
a loss. So me not tumbling to the fact that I had a problem was not a
surprise.
I managed to get the new one in place.

I'm not sure what is going on. I tried to send the first one with the
unfortunately bigger size pictures. ( I reduced them to 1500 which is the
size that I normally do)I got a notice that the file size was too big and
therefore not posted. I reduced even further and resent it. Then I get both
of them as sent.
So sorry for the confusion.

New regulator Worked? The tach is driven by one of the three white
wires..(three Phase) coming from the stator to the rectifier . so if
that particular wire is broken, or heaven forbid a winding in the stator
is bad...then that would show no rpms..certainly... some three phase
regulators should charge with just two phases since all three wires go
to three separate diodes first of all..and you get a high dc which is
regulated to 13 to 14 volts.. With the engine running..an Ac volt meter
connected to ground and each wire should show 40 to 50 volts ac...or an
ac reading across any two of the three..measure all 6 possibilities...
Doesn't sound like the Voltage reg?? The EIs box should show
battery voltage on a certain screen...Herb

My information indicated that if the r/r wasn't charging, there would be no
RPM's shown. What I was advised to do to get them shown was to put more of
a load on the R/R to cause the charging circuit to kick in.
It is also my understanding that the things either work or nothing works.
There is not supposed to be any middle ground. This one didn't work.
One thing I do know is that the other one was not producing any charge,
this one is. If the wind dies tonight, I will fly it a bit to see if the
RPM's continue to register. If not then I will fly in the morning.

Interesting ...a lack of ac pulses to the tach circuit in the Eis
box..would only be dependent on amplitude...and possibly the diode that
sees that white wire in the Reg. could have been shorted which would
kill the tach pulses...not an uncommon failure mode... Herb

Subject: | Wish me luck.... |
Have an opportunity to get a Firestar that is complete and almost flyable this
weekend. Wish me luck. Will post photos and details as soon as applicable.
Building my Firestar kit at the hangar several evenings per week was causing....
difficulty.... at home, and I made an agreement to put it up on the shelf or
sell it, in return for be ing able to get a flying aircraft.
So hopefully I can become a "Flying Kolber" sooner than I had anticipated. Would
still love to build one, and incorporate the experimental modifications that
I had drawn out, but this is an opportunity to get flying faster and not wind
up being single.
