I flew my Xtra from a farmers fields for years, never l anded at an airport and never had any trouble. Seems to me that some pilots just love working on their planes and any excu se they can find to add something or screw something on or beef something u p and generally add weight to a plane that was designed pretty well in the first place is OK. That=99s fine, we all get our kicks in different ways but most of the stuff that we do to our Kolbs is `nice to have` as opposed to necessary. But if you get enough time on yo ur Kolb, you would understand why the braces are recommended. Sent from my iPhone > On Aug 6, 2016, at 5:38 AM, Patrick Ladd wrote: > > > For what its worth. The fix is much easier and safer than after it breaks. I bolted two aluminium straps 1/8 by 1 inch on tail of my MKIIIC. I have since personally seen a firestar II have this issue. This shows the aluminum side brace which was installed on both sides. I also added an extra bolt and pin to prevent the tail rod from twisting. Extra aluminum braces and gussets were added inside the triangular tail assembly but are now covered up. I am running 800x6 on my Firestar with about 8 lbs of air. I would prefer less, but spinning the tube can be a problem. It is possible to secure them with screws, check archives, depending the type of rim that you have. I am using the breakaway tail wheel so it is small. With the tail post brace you shouldn't have too much problem.
