For what ever reason, I did not see the message concerning the HACman
system until this morning. I normally get each message in real time and the
digest overnight. The messages concerning mileage did not show up until
this morning in the digest.
When I was flying my 447, I got about 20 Miles per gallon. If you are not,
then I would have to guess that your jetting of the engine is incorrect. I
have forgotten enough about that process that I hesitate to try to advise
you in other than general terms. I assume that you are new to 2 stroke
engines? If that is not so- disregard the following. There is nothing wrong
with 2 strokes, if they are tuned properly.
The factory recommendations did not work for me, and it took a bit of
fiddling to get the engine jetted correctly. I am at 4000 feet altitude so
what worked for me may not work for you. The EGT's are your best indicator.
I seemed to do the best when my EGT's were about 1150 flying at normal
cruise. My problem came about when I cut the power. It wanted to red line.
The size of the main jets (if I remember correctly) control the egt temps
and the position of the clips is your fine tuning. If you are too rich, and
your egt's are too low, then it is most likely that you are building up
carbon within your engine.
The Hacman system works best with the four stroke engine. On a 2 stroke the
limit for egt's is about 1230. For my HKS it is about 1400, and it is only
effective at the higher altitudes. As you know the higher you go the
thinner the air and the richer the fuel. Flying at 200 feet the Hacman has
little effect, and for me is best left off. At 1000 or more feet agl the
system will fine tune the fuel consumption by increasing the air going to
the carbs. Most likely not for your system.
Your engine should be using about 2.5 gph.

Still reconstructing our fuselage cage from part of a Firestar 1 and an
early Firefly, to get it to be what we think a typical Firefly cage is
supposed to look like. So far we are quite satisfied, but - can anyone post
or pm me some pictures of the cage interior showing the various pulleys and
how the elevator and rudder cables align and go through them? If you email
them it is thegreybaron(at)charterdotnet
Thanks!

Subject: | Turnbuckle part number... |
Hello Kolbers,
I am tying to figure out how to rig my control cables. My plans call for a couple
of turnbuckles connecting the cables to the stick. The part number in the plans
is AN140-16S. This number gets me no where at my Aircraft parts store, when
they enter it. Could someone send me a more current part number for the turnbuckles,
so I can get the correct size? I called Kolb but no one is around today.
Thanks,
Nick Cassara

What is the difference between a Kolb KXP and the Firestar 1 & Firestar ll. There
is a KXP for sale locally. Thank you in advance.

Major difference is fuselage. KXP uses the original FS
fuselage. I prefer that to the FSII fuselage. I believe
the ailerons are longer on the KXP.
Please correct me if I am wrong.

Thank you for the information. Here is a photo of the plane. The seller is a non
pilot who purchased it with the intent of learning to fly.

I read on the Kolb site the evolution of the KX series to the KXP. The KXP was
designed with 7 ribs and beefier drag strut to accommodate the more powerfull
Rotax 503.
I am looking at two Kolbs both owned by people who never flew either of them.
Their knowledge of the planes is limited hence all the questions to this group.
They are both on barnstormers currently. One in Harrisburg PA and one in New
Hope PA. The one in Harrisburg has a BRS which has to be removed when folding
the plane. The one in New Hope does not. Is removing a BRS a common thing for
Kolbs? I would probably want to upgrade to a 503 because of my higher weight
as a corn fed amish country Lancastrian. I want to make sure either of these
planes would accommodate the 503. Thank you in advance to anyone who replies.
Info below from Kolb site.
In 1990, some minor styling changes were introduced resulting in the KX series.
The rear cage on the original FireStar was covered completely right up to the
wing; on the KX series the covering only goes about half way up -- the rest being
left open for 360 degree visibility. The KX series may still be fully enclosed
by the use of clear lexan windows around the rear cage, which still allows
for 360 degree visibility.
The cockpit sides were lowered on the KX series to make entry easier, and the windshield
is full length up to the wing. The KXP was the KX with a stronger wing
to accommodate the more powerful Rotax 503 engine: the KXP had 7 ribs (vs 5
ribs for the KX) per wing panel and a stronger drag strut arrangement. These
additional items added only about 5-1/2 pounds to the FireStar KXP wings.
