Kolbers,
The list seems to be in hibernation, so I was just wondering if anyone is out flying
their Kolb on skis this winter?
Stay Warm,

A guy a couple hangers down built skis out of a couple snow boards for his
avid. In the summer he uses some 800 x 8. When on skis he has some
more narrow tires. He built a A frame that goes over the axel, where it
mounts to the snow boards there are a couple of 1 inch pieces that go down
each side to support where the wheels are cut through. There is about a
half inch over cut front and back, with around 3/4 inch on the sides.
The wheel sticks around 1 1/4 + or - below the bottom of the boards, with
a small boggy wheel on the back end just so the board don't drag. To
finish the installation he has the travel limiting cables with bungies to
keep the tips up.
I've never seen them on the plane, only on the corner of the hanger, but
he claims that they work great in snow and on hard surfaces.
He said he found the matching boards at a pawn shop for cheep.
The only questions I really have... He mounted the A frames in the center
front to back. I would have thought that mounting the A frames 6 to 10
inches aft of center would keep the tips up in soft snow.

I have a set of water skis that I put on my Kolb years ago. I used them
once and they worked great. Then I changed to new spring steel gear legs
that didn't have a good mount for the skis. I retired 14 years ago and
escape the Michigan snow every winter so they just sit.
I used the stock gear leg to axle bracket to attach a door hinge for the
ski mount. One half of the hinge was on the plane and the other half
attached to the ski. I used a long bolt as a hinge pin allowing easy
mounting. The skis were just inboard of the planes wheel/tires and sat app
one inch off solid ground. Boyd you are correct the mounting point on the
skis is aft of center to keep the tips up in the snow. I had safety
restraining cables to keep the tips from dropping too far if the bungy
failed and another cable to keep the tails from dropping to far when under
tension from the bungy that kept the tips up. The tails would just drag on
the ground when out of the snow.
I had similar snow skis that I put on my old Weedhopper that I flew a bunch
in the winter. I was sitting in the prop blast and remember getting
frostbite where my scarf failed to cover a slit between my helmet and
snowmobile suit. Fresh snow would really throw off my depth perception, can
be dangerous.
There's a cold snap down here in Florida only 70 degrees today.
