Richard and John...... Great input regarding the diagonals..... surface contact between 2 round tubes is minimal to begin with.... then asking a 1/8" pulled rivet to exist happily with about 3/8" grip length and reversing loads...... ahhhhh... must be a better form. Will fab up something that improves on existing and add one "V brace" style with concentric contact points to either end. Thanks! Dennis at the Kolb facility is making up an aluminum 18 gal. tank for the 3X . I'm not fond of a fill in the interior of a fuselage so am looking for ideas for an exterior fill. Rural nature of use will require fueling from cans at least half the time so underwing location doesn't seem too feasible..... has there been any success mounting one below the engine through the aft flat area of the fuselage or vertically through the center section? At this point the tank and fuselage fittings can be located wherever works best. Mike Cranson Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=478844#478844

Mike, see if you can find a pic of John Haucks fuel tank, mounted high inside the fuselage. after 3000+ hours it obviously works Fair winds, Russ K > On Mar 24, 2018, at 1:05 PM, k3x <consort2@msn.com> wrote: > > > Dennis at the Kolb facility is making up an aluminum 18 gal. tank for the 3X . Mike I have a filling system like you have proposed. It is in a higher pressure area so you don't have to be worried about fuel flow issues if the seal gets compromised. I used a boat fuel filler that also has a vent for venting when filling and fuel delivery. I do caution that the angle of the tube back to the tank is low so there can be some burping of fuel if your fill too fast. Using 5 gallon cans is never a problem but filling with a huge airport fuel nozzle takes careful use. Also Lexon doesn't like fuel being spilled on it. I can send a more higher res photo direct if you need it. I reinforced my bow tips with the standard brace in line with the main spar plus an additional brace at 45 deg forward from the original brace. I used 1/2" .032 6061 tubing plus I installed a sheet aluminum web between the top and bottom tube brace. The web keep the tubes in column. I can now push my wing up by the bow tip until I lift the main gear nearest me. Bow tips built the standard way have a lot of flex and would probably fail it you tried that with them. I also used 1/2" tube braces on the leading edge of the wing. Compressed the tips and used about 4 or 5 rivets to secure on each end. After 3400+ hours they are still hanging on. ;-) john h mkIII SN: M3-011 Titus, Alabama -----Original Message----- From: owner-kolb-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-kolb-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of k3x Sent: Saturday, March 24, 2018 11:46 AM Subject: Kolb-List: Re: Wing structure upgrades Richard and John...... We built an 18 gal aluminum tank for my original Firestar. Made the fuel fill from PVC and chrome plated brass P-Trap. Ran the fill pipe back to the top rear of the fuselage under the engine or to one side of the engine. Can't remember for sure. Last time I flew it was 28 years ago last week. We built a 25 gal aluminum tank for my MKIII. I fill it through the top rear of the center section. Pain in the butt to remove and install center section, but that is a task I seldom am required to do. Used a sight gauge for both Kolbs secured to the rear bulkhead so I could/can easily see the fuel level. Very accurate and fail safe, I hope. john h mkIII Titus, Alabama -----Original Message----- From: owner-kolb-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-kolb-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of k3x Sent: Saturday, March 24, 2018 12:05 PM Subject: Kolb-List: Mk3 Xtra Fuel Tank Install....
