That of course is the question and it basically comes down to the risk one
is willing to take. My risk has escalated since there is now no one here
that knows my plans or movements. I have a Spot tracker that sends out a
track every 10 minutes. I installed a link on my next door neighbors
computer, but as busy as they are, it might not be even looked at until I
am missed. That could take a few days. In essence my main protection comes
from a feature that allows me to request help. ( that is a non emergency
situation) and a button that will summon 911. All of that assumes that I
will be able to utilize these buttons. Of course if I am not able to do so,
then it is rather a moot point.
My best protection is the condition and type of plane that I fly. The
engine, the landing gear, the VG's, all are designed to give me the best
possible chance of survival. Still it all comes to the willingness to
accept the risk involved. In answer to a question from Roger Hankins to the
late John Williamson, about what happens if something goes wrong? He said "
Well then its going to hurt".

Another famous quote from our friend John Williamson. John W, as we
called him, died 10 years ago tomorrow. Grateful for the short time we
had to spend together flying and exploring this great country of ours.
John Bickham was John B and I was John H. We were the 3 Johns. We had
a lot of fun flying together and enjoyed each others' company. A group
of us Kolbers became family 15 years ago at the first Kolb
Unplanned/Unorganized Flying at Monument Valley, Utah. We hit it off
and have visited at our gatherings at MV and at the Rock House every
year hence. At our September 2018 get together we can also remember our
buddy John W.

I understand that the upgrade to a 4 stroke engine, and VG's etc. are a big part
of preventing a problem. My question was what if you simply made a good safe
survivable landing out there, and found yourself un-injured and standing in one
of those canyons. Looks like a long walk to anywhere. The SPOT device is a
real good option, and I believe that you can "call 911" from that and they will
send the Sheriff or local state troopers out to get you.

Larry needs a new SPOT X 2-Way Satellite Messenger. Bumped into these on line
the other day. Lets you text through the satellite to any cell phone, both ways.
https://www.findmespot.com/spotx/lander.php
I may look into one for staying in touch while I do some extensive marine cruising.
I have had a PLB (Personal Locater Beacon) for years. Never had to use it, but
got it in case I do need it. It hooks you up to NOAA SARSAT Rescue Center,
but only to be used in dire life and death emergencies.

Before flying in extremely desolate areas, best to get some training and experience
in survival with the proper survival equipment.
