John, from northern california.=C2- =C2-FS ll,503Yes, several upgrades
when building the 2-place version, which probably is shown on your plans. M
y plans also call for these upgrades when a 503 is being used.
7 wing ribs, not 5wing has reinforced drag strut, (internal sleeve full len
gth) with 2 drag strut bracesailerons are shorter on 2 place versionLift st
rut internal tube is full lengthLanding gear legs are larger diameter, the
sockets in the fuselage may have a=C2- =C2- =C2- =C2-reducing bushi
ng that would need to be taken out.
I received a directive from Kolb some time ago that the second seat bottom
horizontal tube was showing weld breakage due to flexing (upon landing?) an
d theywanted that tube to be cut, with a sliding sleeve to bridge a small g
ap in that tube.I incorporated a second set of cable pulleys on this sleeve
tube to guide the elevator and rudder cables where they enter the tail boo
m tube.I would verify exactly which tube is to be cut with Kolb.
I sure enjoy the conversations on this list.=C2- Hope to meet you guys in
person one day. My notes on the two place version should be verified with
plans from Kolb.

Our fly-in is now complete. My mission of scattering my wife's ashes went
off without a hitch.
Its been really dry here and the extra airplane traffic did not help the
condition of the runway. I secured a 2x6 to the rear of my quad trailer to
set the tail wheels of the Kolbs in to pull them to the top of the hill so
that we weren't covering every thing in clouds of dust. The Carbon cub and
highlander we just tied to the tail wheel and pulled them to the top.
I have no idea of how many people were here, but I was kept hopping most of
the time. Mike Hale from Seattle came down with his firestar and his lovely
wife to fly with us. He was using a short wind screen which did little to
help his speed or keep the wind out of his face. Its quite nice if you are
not in a hurry, but I found that the wind always hit me in the wrong place
and made my nose run. Snot streaks on my glasses was not my idea of a good
time. We braced his screen so that it didn't keep bending over on him.
I was able to do a couple of short videos of our two flights together.

Subject: | Re: Firestar II Second seat option |
I wanted to add a comment regarding the photos of repaired or re-welded joints.
I don't know if the weld areas were cleaned first or not.. but just saying.
For a Kolb.. maybe the application isn't too critical? But just for the sake
of others who see the photos.. (Most owners will never do any welding on their
kit Kolbs.. but if you do...)
It's very important to maintain the strength of the tubing during any welding.
Any impurities will reduce the strength. The metal should be free of any rust,
or paint, or oil that might have been used to prevent rusting. Paint remover
works, or using a flame, then wire brush, or light sanding. Wipe the joint
with a clean cloth and solvent as well. And most of this should be done right
before any welding. I even run Scotch-brite over my welding rods to clean them
as well. And while welding, try to keep the tip of the rod within the area
of the flame (or for TIG, the inert gas). Pulling it back into open air will
cause quick oxidation. It will then throw off small sparks when the rust is
ignited. The puddle should be glassy with no sparking or popping. I'm right
handed, so I hold the filler rod in my left hand, between my little finger and
the next. That allows it to be held steady, yet to slip thru, while being pushed
by my thumb and forefinger grip. This will make for smooth feeding of the
rod, into the established puddle. I've used oxyacetylene, but can't afford
the trick adjustable flame torches. So I use TIG, which covers the weld with
inert gas.. and with a foot or thumb control, it's super easy to adjust the amount
of heat needed. Be sure to coat the joint after it's cooled to prevent oxidation,
until it's cleaned, primed and painted.
Keep em flying!
Jerry

If I can get my Kolb flying right and making the same speed as Larry's HKS Firestar
then I will sure try to get there next year. Seems like a good time and a
chance to meet several Kolbers in person.

It's a bit early but that should be about right.
