Today is sub freezing, icy, and generally TV worthy but I'm even tired of that so I decided to track down a replacement vial. Turns out that it's a Stanley part but they're out of stock. Found the right size at McMaster Carr for less than $3 but shipping would probably push it up to $15. More searching and thoughts about levels in general and I decided to check out the string level sitting in a tool box out in the hangar. It's a Swanson part that can be had at Lowe's, Amazon, and Harbor Freight. The vial popped right out of the plastic frame of the string level and right into the prop protractor. Problem solved and I can pick up a new string level the next time I'm in The Big Tool Store (legendary local store where you can walk the aisles for hours).
