In summary they say to get a third party condition inspection before you buy. I cannot discuss the firestar2 as I dont know the aircraft but I do have a mkIII Xtra. If I were buying a 2nd hand kolb I would look for the following 4 major things.. 1/ Engine condition. Run a compression test and borescope the cylinders. Check the logs and maintenance records. Check the hours. An engine that was run consistently may be better than one that sat. Again check for corrosion. 2/ Airframe. Is it built to plans and is there any corrosion. Check for hanger rash, dents, dings etc. Again check the logs. Is everything built to aircraft standards 3/ Covering. Is the covering and paint condition airworthy. How was it stored? Do a punch test on the fabric if possible. 4/ Avionics. What is in the aircraft and how old? Avionics can be expensive. If you are not familiar with aircraft inspection get an A&P friend to look at it. These are my recommendations based on my experience of what can go wrong. Good luck.
