In spite of my best efforts it got on the seals and the bearings. Eventually everything got cleaned up and ready to reassemble, but the question remained; how do I keep those varmints out of there? Using a Dremel to cut it worked best. The pictures pretty well explain things. After I got it in place, then I bent it down tight.
