=EF=BB Mikr ,Thanks for the resopnce , your eperence has been about the same as mi ne ,I flew for 10 years but it was befor the "sport pilots " came into being ! Iwas just wondering if the FAA had changed its attude sense te Sport pilo t , and aircraf ----- Original Message ---- From: Mike Welch <mdnanwelch7@hotmail.com> Sent: Thursday, October 9, 2008 10:12:56 PM Subject: RE: Kolb-List: Firefly Chris, It's been my experience, and pretty much most everyone else's, evidently, t hat IF you LOOK like a legal ultralight (single seat, 5 gal., ~254 lbs.) the FAA just about d oesn't care. They do care if you buzz the White House, interfear with legal FAA traffic , drop stuff onto people down below, piss off some airport manager...and he reports you and de mands blood. It's only when you call extreme attention (negatively) to yourself that you w ould likely bring their wrath down upon you. It almost sad, but the "ultralight" is of so little concern to most FAA em ployees, that I'd bet few of them know exactly the rules and parameters of a true Part 103 Ultrali ght, without having to look it up. I've heard several times the comment....."If it looks like an ultralight, then it IS an ultralight." Now, don't misinterpret my words to say a fat (15+lbs or more) ultralight i s okay. I'm not sugggesting we ignor the rules. I'm only suggesting that if your UL is a co uple pounds over, and you NEVER do anything wrong, you'd probably have virtually nothing to wo rry about. Let's face it, it's easy for the FAA guys to hang around the FSDO and drink c offee and eat donuts, than it is to go out sweatin' about some pour little pilot wannabe and his t oy (their attitude NOT mine). That's my take on the subject. Of course, there can always be an exceptio n. (Keep in mind everyone has different experiences with how and where their U L's are flown. I'm used to litlle podunk airports, that lead to other little podunk airport, an d grassy fields, etc. Some may have an entirely different exposure. FWIW...don't worry...be happy!!) Now I have another question. Any listers out there that ar e flying a Firefly and have been overhauled or ramp checked by the FAA ? I k now that TNK has gone a long way to be sure the firefly fits into Pt. 103 bu t I wonder what happens in an FAA ramp check? And if anyone has had one did y ou pass? It's been some years since the following was said by genuine FAA reps at a Safety Seminar. Apologies to those on here who have heard it before. And he says: If your plane LOOKS like a Eipper, but it's made out of lead pipe (and still flies?).. we don't care. If your fuel tank numbers go to 10.. the 'correct answer' is, "It's calibrated in liters". ... and we're CERTAINLY not going to get into your ultra-light and fly it at WOT to know how fast it will go!! But.. if it has two seats.. YOU ARE FLYING AN ILLEGAL AIRCRAFT.. without registration, without a pilots license, w/o a current annual inspection, without bi-annual flight reviews, (etc, etc). They had just had 3 "ultra-light" crashes, with 5 fatalities, and one survivor. So, even 15 lbs over may not matter? Keeping out of regulated air-space? A buddy of mine, noticed a bunch of police traffic while he was flying his.. like LOTS of them, sirens and lights on. And then he realized, they were following him. He had flown well within the 5 mile radius once too often, and a National Guard chopper reported him. Luckily no fines (as I recall).. but he did learn his lesson.
