      A GPS solution ....If you have an Android based smartphone, there's an aviation
      navigation application. (If you don't have a smartphone, this could be an excuse
      to get one

      I've used an app called "Open Flight GPS" that looks similar. It works 
      ok, but lacks altitude information. It's nice to have, but certainly no 
      replacement for a Garmin 496. I'll have to check this out!
