No help to offer re the paint, but maybe you could repaint or dye the
soft panels. You get dyes made for shoes, both leather and synthetic
that may work.
Keep the list posted with results as you go.

Subject: | partial power loss |
--> L29-List message posted by: "Jorgen Nielsen" <jorgen.nielsen@mweb.co.za>
Today I experienced partial power loss. Had work done on the engine,
and took her up for the test flight.
All indications normal, engine run-up OK. Took off allright, levelling
off downwind all indications still normal but I kept having this nagging
feeling that power was down a bit - based on levelling off and
acceleration in the circuit. Went to 100%, acceleration was fine.
Turned cross and then onto final for a flypast at 1500ft, seeing the
runway in front could not resist a little dive and "runway inspection".
Was re-cleared by ATC to 1000ft, zoomed up, pushed level, glance at
instruments, 60% on the tacho. I got the uh-oh feeling. Confirmed
throttle fully forward, closed and re-opened, nothing, closed throttle,
isolation valve on, throttle slowly forward, rpm started picking up. By
this time I had turned for rwy, called atc, decided I was too close &
high for rwy I had just passed and positioned for a glide approach to a
cross runway.
Engine was surging, I reduced rpm, felt like everything had a 2 second
delay.
Landed fine. Engine was still running so taxied back. At idle, without
touching throttle, engine rpm would drop, then surge to 50%, then drop,
then back up again, etc.
Ideas? To me it would seem to be the acceleration valve.

Either that or a dirty fuel filter.

Call the office manager and complain. Tell him the guy is being un reasonable.
Tell him to walk down any row of airplanes and show him all the hail damage. Did
he give you any paper work grounding you? Or is this your inspection to obtain
your first airworthiness? In any case call and complain. If what you say is
fact, and you haven't left anything out, make the call.

the damaged spot is about the size of a quarter and if you laid a flat edge
over it, it would appear to be about 1/16th or a little less. of an inch deep.
I cant tell if it was pushed in a little also or it it was actually that
worn away. Where do I find out what is acceptable and what has to be fixed. The
faa guy said if I could show him something that said what damage was within
limits I did not have to mess with it but where the heck would I find that. The
biggest issue is the plane is stripped so its not like I can use filler and
re-paint the spot. Any suggestions, Ideas. etc. thanks Brian

bill thanks for the info. I took a flat edge to it and a caliper and it only
measured 32 thousandth at its deepest point. He did not ground me , he saw
it sitting on the ramp and put a tag on it saying these things needed to be
fixed prior to flight, Well I guess that would be grounding it. Nothing was
left out. I can send you a pic of the spot. Any idea how think the metal on
the leading edge of that wing is? If I know that maybe I can argue that 32
thousandths will not make any difference in strength. thanks for the info.
