I'm thinking that an after market air to air intercooler as used in turbocharger applications may make the existing system more effective. I think the heat exchanger is just not efficient enough to cool the air prior to the turbo cooler. It should be possible to adapt one of these large intercoolers in place of the current unit. The only issue is if the aftermarket units can handle the pressures.
