(formation flying) Apparently there are some good old boys as FAST check pilots. SAY IT ISN"T SO! Anyway, when they are giving check rides, they tend to ignor some of the requirements and performance standards outlind by FAST. It is not good to lower the bar. When I'm 3' from the airplane next to me, I want to know that we all trained, and maintain a personal level of proficiency that exceeds the minimum standards. The conversation on-line between the FAST check pilots, is that some organizations, RPA, NATA or any of the other signatories are thinking of not honoring the other organizations FAST cards. So if you have a CJAA lead or check pilot card, and you decide to join the RPA, you may be required to take another check ride. Another $1000 ride - OH GOODIE! My suggestion is that when you are given the check ride or training, you must demand from the instructor that he grill you until sweat if pouring from your brow. Don't take the criticisim personally. Raise the bar. Its your butt. If you are uncomfortable doing certain maneuvers, tell the instructor that at this time you are not comfortable with this yet. i.e. formation takeoffs or landings is probably not something you need for the first time you are only feet from another airplane. Sometimes the instructors like to "show off" what they can do. Remember your $$ your butt. On the other hand, there comes a time when you have to trust the instructors. They may see that you have the ability and knowledge but are just having a bad day flying. Its like when I did my first solo. I knew I was NOT ready, but the teacher says go grasshopper. Thou shalt complete 2 T&G's and 1 full stop and thou shalt be born again. I said #@+***. He, to his credit, ignored me. Enough soap box stuff. Ernie, Has the airconditioning project? Summer is coming. Piper or Beech had a unit for their single engine airplanes. Would they work? Has anyone replaced their nitrogen bottles? What's involved with the fittings? Maybe braise the new ends on? How was it? ________________________________ Message 3 _____________________________________ Time: 09:31:45 AM PST US From: "Ernest Martinez" Subject: Re: L29-List: FAST --> L29-List message posted by: "Ernest Martinez" Its not restricted to Lead or Check but Wing as well. Actually it happened to me. I received my LOA through CJAA. Then I quit CJAA and wanted to transfer my FAST card over to RPA ( who I had gotten all my FAST training from). I had to take a "Standardization ride" which is a euphomysm for a check ride. Its all bullshit, but the prior president of RPA is now the president of FAST, and he's the guy that made up this rule. Bottom line though getting FAST qualified in a JET is rediculous. In RPA you need about 10 to 15 rides before you get your checkride, unless you have previous military experience. Find someone with a Yak or a CJ and get it at 15 gal/hr rather than 150. I havent done much with the AC project as of late. I may get started again soon though.
