I was there for the "builders assist" 1-week program in Feb. 01 for my kit # 157. My comments would read exactly like those above as I thought that week was the most useful of the whole project. One big thing is that it completely eliminates building any tooling or jigs for the project, allowing you to concentrate on fiberglass instead. And I previously took the Sportair workshop at Corona, CA. The new 2-week program, which includes a lot more that what I received, would be an even better deal, in my opinion. How are you doing on your kit? I am about ready for my enjine and panel. I too, believe the two week builder assist program is the only way to go and am glad to hear you feel the same way. Yes, it also seems that the 2nd week is well advised, for I'm told that it focuses on fitting the doors and the gear... no small projects either! I have just finished building another plane (a 4 year project - so I can certainly understand what you mean about the commitment in time.) In fact, just won outstanding "Light Airplane" at Sun-n-Fun. Flew it from Houston to Lakeland over 2 days at 80 kts. and 1500 ft. - a ton of fun! Thanks again for your thoughts on the builders assist program and will probably be in touch with you a lot as things with the ES develop. Just retired a few months ago and with so much time now - hope to be able to build the plane in about a year or so... probably wishful thinking! Yes, I would love to see your pictures... please send them. Also, let me ask you... are there not very many other Lancair builders on this site? My other plane's site had a number of builders and proved to be a valuable tool for everyone involved in building their plane. Look forward to hearing from you... Charles White Houston, TX 713-532-0150 Charles I was the first one to go to the builders assist program for the ES. I went for one week. during that week I closed my wings, horizontal stab and elevators. the time savings in not having to build those jigs is well worth it. It saves hundreds of hours of work. I definitely recommend the 2 weeks at the factory. I started my kit in July of 01 and have aprox 2k hours on it. there is probably a thousand hours left. I bought every fast build option available at the time. I could probably cut a third of that time if I had to do it again. It takes a while to get good at doing the composite work. I took a weekend sportair class on doing composite work in griffin Georgia. I would recommend taking a similar course before the two week builders assist. I wanted to build this plane and have enjoy doing it. All I can say is make sure that you and your family are prepared for the time commitment required. I have pictures of the work from the builders assist program. if you want them I can email some of them to you. Good luck Ron ________________________________ Message 4 _____________________________________ Time: 05:11:59 PM PST US From: John Schroeder Subject: Re: Lancair-List: Lancair - ES... 2 week builder program --> Lancair-List message posted by: John Schroeder Hi Charles - Ron Szot and I are building a Super ES and live in the Charlotte, NC area. We did not get the millenium fastbuild ES (not available at the time be bought in April of 01), but the kit has a lot of the millenium features. This makes the manuals a bit gruesome because they are not only out of date, but even more so with the later fastbuild kits. This is another story, but somewhat relevant to your decision. Before we closed out our wing, we asked to go to the factory and participate in the builder assist workshop for an L-IV. Since the IV has many features in common with the ES, we wanted to get as much info as possible on all aspects of the building process. Marke Mahnke welcomed 2 willing laborers so we went in early Dec of 2001. We were most fortunate. Two Legacies and two LIV's were in the center - and all were just beginning week one of the builder assist shop. We had only 3 days, but it was worth every penny and minute. We got to see almost every aspect of the 2 week L-IV program because one project started on their wings and the other started on the fuselage. I believe that anyone starting and ES ought to go for the 2 week program. In 2 weeks, you will be at a point where we expect to be after about 26 months of building!!! :-( If you have the extra budget, it will be the best investment you could make in the build process. YOu get fabulous progress, great knowledge, superb assistance and a chance to spend 2 weeks working hard but getting to know some of the very best folks in the business. If you do go for the builder assist, I'd work extra hard to find an another worker-bee to go along to help. It will make a world of difference. Put out the word and maybe someone who is working on an ES or contemplating an ES would like to learn how to do it. Another way to look at it is that you will get 2 solid weeks of firehose tech support without waiting or leaving voice mails!! :-) Go for it. Cheers, John Schroeder LNCE - 50%
