Steve:
I just bought a Glasair III with 200 hours.? My first kit/home built airplane.?
Even more so than a certified airplane, get a good pre-buy.? I had a cursory
pre-buy done (in spite of my better judgement) and now am finding many items that
need attention.? In the kit built world, the level of durability is much lower
than your average certified airplane.? Much more has to be tweaked, re-torqued,
replaced, and adjusted just to keep it safe.? The Glasair is one of the
better kits, but even so, I'm finding the durability of a 200 hour airframe to
be surprisingly fragile.? Remember (especially on composite airplanes) these
are custom made, one-off creations, so no two are exactly alike.? Further, the
expectations of (certified level) build technique should be dampened.
Good luck.
Jeff

Greetings all,
I am a first time subscriber and new to the Lancair world although I
have lusted after them in my heart for years. I have a deposit on
one I found on Barnstormers but I need to verify the quality of the
construction. This is a 360 MK II that Mark Meyers is selling. From
the photos it appears to be exceptionally well constructed but who
knows. I am looking for someone that knows Lancairs and composite
construction to meet me in Moneta VA (Smith Mountain Lake) and look
it over. I am working a list from EAA and may get someone off that.
I would pay reasonable expenses. I'm in Memphis and would be coming
up all or part way on US Air. Also if anyone kn ows anty of the
history of this kit and would be willing to share it, that would be
great.
Thanks,
Steve

Jeff,
I understand your frustration, not all =93Composite=94 airplanes are
created
equal. You should know that the later variant of homebuilt composite
airplanes are more akin to standards of certified like airplanes and in
many cases better. But the point you make that these are homebuilt does
lent to the fact that they are in fact one offs. I would also challenge
you assumption that the =93Glassair is one of the better kits.=94
Don=92t
confuse kit with airplane, they are very different! I have helped build
two Glassairs and find by today=92s standard the Glassair to be a cruder
kit but a fine airplane once the airplane is finished, if build well.
Mike
