Subject: | Re: Engine choice for Lancair IV |
There is a guy at Marana Regional Airport just North of Tucson, Arizona who
installed=C2-a Corvette V8 in his ES. I just spoke to him and looked at
his plane last week. He purchased a new "crate engine" from Chevy for a tot
al price of $6,000.00. Much cheaper than=C2- a Continental IO 550N. I am
currently building an ES and the Continentals are really expensive....like
over $40,000.00!!!=C2- He said that the Chevy is heavy on the nose, (of c
ourse), and because of that, he approaches with more speed across the numbe
rs. He is using a composite, electrically operated variable pitch prop. Don
't know the brand. His biggest problem was cooling, so, he installed anothe
r radiator below the firewall, (on the bottom of the plane), =C2-and buil
t a scoop for air intake. It looks a little odd but solved the over heating
problem. He uses non-leaded auto fuel without any problems. There are no m
ixture adjustments....the computer does that for you. He has over 600 hours
on the plane and seems to like it.
Hope this helps.

Subject: Lancair-List: Engine choice for Lancair IV
I am ready to hang an engine on my L-IV project (not-pressurized) and am ag
onizing over the choice of engine. I have a good grasp on the problems with
the Enginair V8 conversions a few years ago but is there ANYONE out there
who has successfully hung one of the GM LS V8 engines on a Lancair IV (or L
egacy). Alternatively=C2-is there anyone who has unsuccessfully done so a
nd is willing to talk about it.
=C2-
Thanks
