Hi again Malcolm,
The carbon fiber prop is infinitely variable between some low pitch
number and some very high pitch number, so yes very fine tuning is possible.
Both top end and bottom end of the settings are way off where you would want to
be. Ben could tell you the exact end numbers. I use a prop protractor to
insure the blades are both set the same. If I try to use the scale on the hub
the blades are not always exactly the same angle according to the protractor.
I was hoping that some of the Esqual (and possible Lightning builders)
that are using the various Rotax models will give us some idea of how their
engines are allowing these fast airplanes to perform. I know the Rotax has
been around a long time, so they must be good, but when I look at the "numbers"
(price, weight, BSFC, power vs. rpm) I kept coming back to the Jabiru. I
think the turbo 914 you mention is close to $10,000 more than the 3300 Jabiru.
I have had my Esqual to 16,000 feet and it was still climbing at 400 fpm so
there was still some excess power there. Besides the "out of the box" 3300
dynos at quite a bit over the stated 120 HP. When broken in it dynos even
higher. I run mine with no muffler and it has a "throaty" airplane sound - I
like that. At my home airport they say it sounds just like a Cirrus SR22 when
taking off. No weed eater noise there. ;-)
A Lightning with the 8 Cylinder Jabiru should be able do the high
altitude cruise above Vne that you mention. But then you would need O2 to really
get the high TAS numbers at altitude. Sounds like something you should do.
Blue Skies,
Buz
