There are still a lot of QF-4's which are target drones. Google the Colling's Foundation, I know they have one. One of the flyers is a plane that was converted to a drone and now back to fighter colors, a gray paint scheme. The other is a camo scheme. I know of none flying in Navy schemes which is pretty sad considering this plane served with the Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corp as top dog for a while. I know the Colling's is a D model I believe. Hope this helps, Brian W. ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 04:46:15 AM PST US From: N1BZRich@AOL.COM Subject: Re: Lightning-List: Lightning Cargo Capacity Questions In a message dated 8/23/2006 2:02:34 A.M. We still have QF-4's (target drones for air to air missile testing) flying out of Tyndall AFB in Florida and they have at least one that they keep show ready and take to various airshows, so that is probably what you saw. They had one at Oshkosh again this year. Kind of sad to have them used that way - even though the missiles are programmed to miss by a certain small distance, occasionally they do get hit. From: "deuskid" --> Lightning-List message posted by: "deuskid" there was a thread that I read yesterday that I can't find today that was asking about 'stability' for x-c by an ex F-4 driver.. I know the RV folks say the 7 and the 9 are pretty good IFR platforms because of their wing area. I know it isn't as simple as sq-ft but it is one significant variable and so I researched each's ft^2: Lightning: 91 RV-6: 110 RV-7: 121 RV-9: 124 is there some quantifiable way to come up with a 'stability' quotent? I am ignorant [but trainable]. Ignorant because I'm not yet a pilot but I may have a long long-term commute in my future and if it comes to be I'm researching options. thanks, John Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=56623#56623 ________________________________ Message 4 _____________________________________ Time: 10:54:17 AM PST US From: "Brian Whittingham" Subject: Re: Lightning-List: Lightning Cargo Capacity Questions --> Lightning-List message posted by: "Brian Whittingham" Out west there were several signs for military aircraft around NM, and AZ. One of them was the QF-4's. Another were Mig 23's which I'm not sure what that was about. Anyhow there are still many of the F-4's mothballed at Davis Motham in Tucson. I understand that they are converting most if not all of the servicable airframes to QF-4's. I think we flew them in the Guard up until like early 90's or so. Israel still flies some too I believe.
