I finally found one of my aircraft, N31BZ, the Esqual LS - Lightning Stuff. B&B in Shelbyville (they do contract work for Pete and the guys) did my interior and they had the embroidery done on the bulkhead. In this photo the side panels in the cockpit are not in place yet and it looks like the baggage area headliner is also not in place. The slits on either side of the clear FAA paperwork holder are for the shoulder harnesses. As a side thought and suggestion for Lightning builders, I will be adding some sort of vent in the bulkhead to let air out of the cockpit. In the summer when you have both cockpit fresh air vents open and you are cruising at 170 or so, so much air come into the cockpit that there is some pressurization of the cockpit. The canopy actually bulges out slightly on each side. Some way for this air to flow through the cockpit into the aft fuselage should fix this situation. I fitted what looks like a small radio speaker cover to the bulkhead as a vent into the rear fuselage and the increae in airflow into the cockpit is doubled. I did however fit it a little low on the bulkhead as when the baggage area is holding a lot of gear it will usually block the vent partially so it would pay to set it higher on the bulkhead. How effect is the Lightning cockpit ventilation without canopy side scoops? Each side of the fuselage, just aft of the firewall, has a NACA ducts that provide air to the cockpit. In the cockpit are adjustable outlets that lets you open and close off the air flow. There are no canopy side scoops. However there is an option to add a small sliding canopy opening similar to what I have seen on gliders. I have one of these on my Esqual canopy. On the ground you can taxi with the Lightning canopy slightly open for fresh air. As far as a mod to let air flow through the cockpit, I have found some round 3" aluminum vents that I plan to use. I will put one on each side of the aft baggage bulkhead near the top. How large was that outlet vent you used? Pleased to hear that the Lightning canopy can be cracked open on the ground. Sure does get hot in this country at times.
